COMMEMORATING the 30th Anniversary of the Food
Bank for Westchester
WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in acknowledging
significant milestones in the distinguished histories of its esteemed
entities; and
WHEREAS, The Food Bank for Westchester will celebrate its 30th
Anniversary during its Spring Gala to be held at the Tappan Hill Mansion
on April 13, 2018; and
WHEREAS, The Food Bank for Westchester was incorporated on September
16, 1988, as Food PATCH (People Allied to Combat Hunger) in Yonkers; and
WHEREAS, Due to increasing needs, Food PATCH moved to a 10,000
square foot warehouse in Hawthorne in 1990, and then to a 15,000 square
foot facility in Millwood in 1993; and
WHEREAS, Food PATCH changed its name to the Food Bank for
Westchester in 2007; and
WHEREAS, In 2008, the Food Bank for Westchester partnered with the
Westchester County Department of Correction, Leake & Watts, and Muscoot
Farm to launch the Food Growing Program, which cultivates unused land
and an available workforce to teach at-risk populations to plant,
cultivate, and harvest fresh produce for the hungry; and
WHEREAS, The Food Bank for Westchester moved to a newly renovated
36,688 square foot facility in Elmsford in 2012; and
WHEREAS, The Food Bank for Westchester launched the Kraft Mobile
Food Pantry, with food partner Stop & Shop Supermarkets, on February 13,
2013; and
WHEREAS, The dedicated staff and volunteers of the Food Bank for
Westchester distributed 7.2 million pounds of food in fiscal year
2013-14; during that same period, 8,747 volunteers donated nearly 20,000
hours to this worthy cause; and
WHEREAS, The Food Bank for Westchester has a long and distinguished
history of providing food to those in need; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Food Bank for Westchester; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Leslie Gordon, President and CEO, Food Bank for
Westchester.
