HONORING William J. McMahon upon the occasion of
his designation for special recognition by St.
Edmund Preparatory High School on April 22, 2018
WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve
the best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration
and cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, William J. McMahon has given not only of his time and
energies but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and
consequently has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor William J.
McMahon upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by
St. Edmund Preparatory High School, to be celebrated at its Anniversary
Gala on Sunday, April 22, 2018, at Giando on the Water, Brooklyn, New
York; and
WHEREAS, William J. McMahon is a true champion of St. Edmund
Preparatory High School and a tireless advocate of the study of
Mathematics and Science; and
WHEREAS, After reading a newspaper article about the disparity
between boys and girls in the study of Math and Science, William J.
McMahon decided to provide a yearly scholarship for a female student who
excelled in the Sciences with the hope they would be encouraged to
pursue their studies in college and beyond; and
WHEREAS, Since 2006, William J. McMahon has awarded a $1,000
scholarship to a female student who exhibits a passion for science; five
years later, he began making an additional gift for a scholarship
dedicated to a female student who excels in mathematics; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, in 2013, William J. McMahon decided to
contribute yet another $1,000 scholarship to be awarded to a male
student with strong aptitude in science; and
WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to the students,
William J. McMahon yearned to introduce them to one of his passions,
investing in the stock market, and subsequently has made substantial
donations to the school's Investment Club; and
WHEREAS, William J. McMahon gives so generously to St. Edmund
Preparatory High School to honor the memory of his daughter Patricia, a
St. Edmund student, who was tragically killed in a car accident during
her sophomore year in 1986; and
WHEREAS, This extraordinary man truly believes that each life, no
matter how brief, forever changes the world; his wish to encourage
students in their studies, in honor of Patricia, truly empowers these
students to change the world; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which William J. McMahon has
displayed throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their
commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent
of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to
William J. McMahon, that future generations may know and appreciate his
admirable character, his many benevolent deeds, and the respect and
esteem in which he is held by his peers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor William J. McMahon upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by St. Edmund Preparatory High School on April 22,
2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to William J. McMahon.
