HONORING Job Mashariki upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the Community Service
Leadership Award by the Community Council for Medgar
Evers College, Inc. on April 21, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
organizations and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare
of the community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Job Mashariki upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Community Service Leadership Award by the Community Council for Medgar
Evers College, Inc. to be celebrated at its Annual Spring Scholarship
and Leadership Awards Luncheon on Saturday, April 21, 2018; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1972, The Community Council for Medgar Evers
College, Inc. includes residents, organizations, faculty, students and
all elected officials of the Central Brooklyn community who support the
mission of the College, and since 1980, has provided more than 220,000
dollars in scholarships to deserving students through fundraising
events, outside grants and contributions; and
WHEREAS, Born in Bedford Stuyvesant in 1943, Job Mashariki earned
his associate degree from New York Technical College, and both his
bachelor's and master's degrees in sociology from the City University of
New York; he is also a graduate of the Columbia University School of
Business Executive Program; and
WHEREAS, In 1979, Job Mashariki founded and served as President/CEO
of Black Veterans for Social Justice, (BVSJ) Inc., a position he held
for 30 years; this vital organization diligently works to assist
military personnel in making a smooth transition from active duty to
civilian life; and
WHEREAS, BVSJ assists military personnel, veterans and their
families in the areas of social readjustment, housing, employment,
compensation, disability, substance abuse, medical treatment, Post
Traumatic Stress Syndrome, family intervention, prison counseling and
relocation into the community, legal advocacy, discharge up-grade and
redress of grievances within and outside the military; it also provides
counseling, benefits information and compassionate care for anyone who
needs a little help and guidance; and
WHEREAS, The staff of BVSJ truly believes all persons could be
productive, positive contributors to society, no matter what sex, race,
social class, military labels or problems that they may have; all humans
wish to do the right thing, but do not often get the opportunity; and
given a boost, a helping hand, all people, particularly veterans, would
respond positively and productively; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his work with BVSJ, Job Mashariki has
dedicated his life to helping the homeless, and those individuals who
suffer from HIV/AIDS, poverty, discrimination, lack of education,
unemployment and racism; and
WHEREAS, Job Mashariki has also served on various boards and has
held leadership positions for numerous organizations including Bedford
Stuyvesant Coalition for Needs & Services, Fort Greene Senior Citizens
Council, Inc., NYC Coalition for Veterans in Pain and Distress, Bedford
Stuyvesant Legal Services Corporation, National Coalition of Homeless
Veterans, Coalition for Improvement of Bedford Stuyvesant, Black Agency
Executives, National Association of Black Veterans, and Human Services
Council of New York City, as well as Von King Park Conservancy; and
WHEREAS, For his steadfast and unremitting commitment to veterans
and his community, Job Mashariki was the recipient of the Community
Development Award, and many commendations from elected officials; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Job Mashariki upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the Community Service Leadership Award by the Community Council for
Medgar Evers College, Inc.; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Job Mashariki.
