COMMENDING the Parkside Community Association upon
the occasion of hosting its 20th Annual Tour of
Homes on May 20, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those organizations and individuals who seek to bring
recognition to historical places within the State of New York, and in
doing so, help to ensure that the complete history of our State and
Nation is preserved and shared with present generations of citizens; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the Parkside Community Association upon the occasion of hosting
its 20th Annual Tour of Homes on Sunday, May 20, 2018; and
WHEREAS, This year's tour features an exclusive Frank Lloyd Wright
Home on the Darwin Martin Complex, the former homes of both Hens and
Kelly of the department stores, the home featured in the film "Best
Friends," and the home in the recent feature movie "Marshall"; these
magnificent homes tell the story of Buffalo and highlight its
resurgence; and
WHEREAS, The Parkside Community Association is the oldest, largest
and most active neighborhood association in the City of Buffalo; and
WHEREAS, Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted designed
Buffalo's first suburb, Parkside, a neighborhood inseparable from
Delaware Park; and
WHEREAS, The area quickly drew the rich and professionals from the
city; over the next 40 years, the development of Parkside was gradually
and methodically completed; and
WHEREAS, The Parkside area of Buffalo contains superb examples of
diverse architectural styles such as the American Four Square,
Victorian, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, and the Arts and Craft Bungalow;
the 1880 through 1930 building period includes designs by prominent
local architects E.B. Green and William Sydney Wicks; and
WHEREAS, In 1987, the entire neighborhood of Parkside became an
Architectural Landscape District on the National Register of Historic
Places; today, through the efforts of the Parkside Community Association
and Parkside residents, the neighborhood (now a part of the City of
Buffalo) is unmatched for its stable blend of social, safety, and
affordability factors; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity
to express its highest admiration for the Parkside Community
Association, and for all of the individuals who have worked to bring
proper attention to a place and time which merits recognition in the
grand panorama of the history of our State and Nation; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Parkside Community Association upon the occasion of hosting
its 20th Annual Tour of Homes on May 20, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Parkside Community Association.
