COMMEMORATING Harvey Milk Day, May 22, 2018

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge extraordinary
occasions and persons who enrich the people of the State of New York;
and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate Harvey Milk Day on Monday, May 22, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Milk's extraordinary work championing human rights
lives on; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Milk was born in Woodmere, New York, in 1930, and
attended college at what would become the State University of New York
at Albany; and

WHEREAS, Upon his election to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors
in 1977, Harvey Milk made history as one of the first openly gay elected
officials in the United States; and

WHEREAS, As a member of the Board of Supervisors, Harvey Milk
sponsored a civil rights bill that prohibited discrimination based on
sexual orientation, which passed and became one of his most enduring
contributions to public life; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Milk's life was cut tragically short when he was
assassinated in 1978 after serving in office for just 11 months; and

WHEREAS, As we celebrate Harvey Milk's birthday, we recognize his
legacy as a passionate advocate for the civil rights of all people
without regard to sexual orientation; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the life of the late Harvey Milk as we commemorate his 87th
birthday.
