CONGRATULATING Carl W. Ripley upon the occasion of
celebrating his 100th Birthday
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commemorate
and recognize certain milestones celebrated by citizens of this great
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge
to the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their
past contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and
valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate Carl W. Ripley upon the occasion of his 100th Birthday to
be celebrated at a party held in his honor on Saturday, May 5, 2018; and
WHEREAS, Carl Winfield Ripley was born to George and Nina Jennings
Ripley on May 3, 1918, in Antwerp, New York; he and his two brothers,
Watson and Robert, and two sisters, Doris and Harriet grew up in the
Antwerp-Gouverneur-Richville, New York area; in 1936, Carl graduated
from the Richville Union School; and
WHEREAS, After marrying his late wife, the former Laverna Reader on
March 9, 1940, the couple moved to Harrisville, New York, where they
raised their family; and
WHEREAS, Carl W. Ripley worked at Pine Camp where he built barracks
until he was drafted; he proudly served his country as a Signalman 3rd
Class in the United States Navy during World War II; and
WHEREAS, After his discharge on October 19, 1945, Carl W. Ripley was
employed as both a shovel operator and yuke truck driver for Laughton
Steel Corporation in Star Lake, New York; in February of 1978, he
retired from this position after 37 years of service; and
WHEREAS, Carl W. Ripley then worked at Ray's Service Station, and
was a guard at various paper mills; he was also the co-owner of R & S
Market in Harrisville; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to his community, Carl W. Ripley was a vital
member of the American Legion, the Harrisville Rod & Gun Club, the
Mullin Flow Hunting Club, and the IOOB, as well as the Harrisville
Volunteer Fire Department for 70 years; and
WHEREAS, A congregant of the Harrisville United Methodist Church,
Carl W. Ripley enjoyed singing in the choir; and
WHEREAS, When he was not working or helping someone, Carl W. Ripley
liked to stay active by bowling or hitting the links; he loved to watch
basketball and spent his summers at his camp on Lake Bonaparte; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his five children, Charles,
Kay, Carl "Skip" Jr., Karen "Sue," and Trudy; his 13 grandchildren, 17
great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, all of whom have
shown him love and support and rejoice in his many achievements; and
WHEREAS, Carl W. Ripley, with his zest for life, has inspired and
enhanced the lives of his family and friends; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished man has experienced the incredible joys
and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the stamina
and courage to savor a full life; and
WHEREAS, Carl W. Ripley has enriched the lives of those around him
through his joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly
recognize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have
witnessed and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and
awesome achievements of this country during the last century, while
themselves contributing to the growth and excellence of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Carl W. Ripley upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th
Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Carl W. Ripley.
