COMMENDING Luann McCarthy posthumously upon the
occasion of her induction into the Port Jervis
School District Alumni Hall of Fame on October 8,
2017
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord
with its long-standing traditions, to commend notable educators and
athletic coaches who serve the youth of this great Empire State and who
have distinguished themselves and their schools through outstanding
commitment and exemplary athletic achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Luann McCarthy posthumously upon the occasion of her induction
into the Port Jervis School District Alumni Hall of Fame, celebrated at
the 8th Annual Port Jervis High School Alumni Hall of Fame Induction
Ceremony and Banquet on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at Erie Trackside Manor
in Port Jervis, New York; and
WHEREAS, Each year, the Port Jervis School District Alumni Hall of
Fame recognizes individuals who have achieved personal success and have
made a significant contribution to society, serving as role models to
inspire current and future generations of Port Jervis students; a member
of the Class of 1976, Luann McCarthy is truly deserving of this great
honor; and
WHEREAS, Luann McCarthy earned her Bachelor of Science degree in
Physical Education from Indiana State University in 1982; eight years
later, she obtained her Master of Science degree in Health Education
from East Stroudsburg University; and
WHEREAS, Luann McCarthy began her long and distinguished career as
both a coach and substitute teacher at Port Jervis School; in 1985, she
was hired full-time as a physical education teacher at Anna S. Kuhl
Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, In 1991, Luann McCarthy transferred to Port Jervis High
School where she taught physical education and coached various sports
teams for 33 years; throughout her tenure, she served as coach of the
modified girls' soccer, junior varsity volleyball, varsity volleyball,
junior varsity girls' basketball, and varsity girls basketball; in 1999,
she led the varsity girls basketball team to a conference title; and
WHEREAS, For 32 years, Luann McCarthy was the coach of the girls
varsity tennis, and for 11 years, the coach of boys varsity tennis;
Coach McCarthy enjoyed two championship seasons with the girls tennis
team; and
WHEREAS, For her steadfast and unremitting commitment to her student
athletes, she was inducted into the Class of 2015 Port Jervis Coaches
Wall of Fame and was the recipient of a John MacKechnie Recognition
Award from the PBA; in addition, the tennis courts at Church Street and
the scorer's table at the high school were both named in her honor; and
WHEREAS, Luann McCarthy's positive demeanor, selfless commitment,
and caring concern contributed to her enduring success as a coach and
mentor, earning her the just respect and admiration of her community,
her peers, and the athletes she so ably coached; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Luann McCarthy posthumously upon the occasion of her induction
into the Port Jervis School District Alumni Hall of Fame on October 8,
2017; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Luann McCarthy.
