HONORING Joseph P. Mangione, Jr. posthumously upon
the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor A
Veteran Ceremony on July 9, 2018

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute; and

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend those
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Joseph P. Mangione, Jr. posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor A
Veteran Ceremony on Monday, July 9, 2018; and

WHEREAS, For his courageous and dedicated service to his country,
Joseph P. Mangione, Jr. will be recognized at this year's July Honor A
Veteran Ceremony; and

WHEREAS, Joseph P. Mangione, Jr. was born on February 8, 1936, to
the late Joseph P. Mangione Sr. and Elizabeth Kehn Mangione; and

WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Troy, New York, Joseph P. Mangione,
Jr. graduated from Troy High School in 1955, before enlisting in the
United States Army on November 24, 1958; and

WHEREAS, Joseph P. Mangione, Jr. honorably served his country as a
medic at West Point Military Academy during the Korean War until his
honorable discharge on November 23, 1960; and

WHEREAS, A salesman by trade, Joseph P. Mangione, Jr. spent his
illustrious career at Lusco Paper Company, retiring in 2000; and

WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering dedication to his
community, Joseph P. Mangione, Jr. was a member of the Troy Board of
Education from 1979 to 1985; in addition, he was a communicant of Sacred
Heart Church and a member of the Troy High School Alumni Association,
the Troy Council Knights of Columbus and a Menands Workshop (Northeast
Career Planning) volunteer; and

WHEREAS, Joseph P. Mangione, Jr. enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and
sailing on Saratoga Lake; he died on May 18, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Joseph P. Mangione, Jr. is survived by his wife of 45
years, Florence Millhouse Mangione; five sons, Joseph K. (Judy), Robert
(Toni), William, Mark and Kurt (Laura); a daughter, Amy; two brothers,
Gerard (Joyce) and Michael (Marie); a sister, Susan (Thomas); 11

grandchildren; a great grandson; his best four-legged friend, Caesar;
and many nieces and nephews; and

WHEREAS, Having exhibited their patriotism both at home and abroad,
these men and women demonstrated their love for their country and merit
forevermore, the highest respect of their State and Nation; and

WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Joseph P. Mangione, Jr. posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor A
Veteran Ceremony on July 9, 2018; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Joseph P. Mangione, Jr.
