COMMENDING Brooklyn Children's Museum upon the
occasion of hosting the launch party for Love Double
Dutch! on April 7, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that the quality
of life of the citizens of the State of New York is greatly enriched by
its exceptional cultural, educational and recreational institutions; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Brooklyn Children's Museum upon the occasion of hosting the
launch party for Love Double Dutch! on Saturday, April 7, 2018; and
WHEREAS, Brooklyn Children's Museum (BCM) is the world's first
museum designed expressly for children; the Brooklyn Institute of Arts
and Sciences founded the Museum in 1899, as an alternative to existing
museums; and
WHEREAS, BCM revolutionized museum-going with its emphasis on
participatory exhibits for children, on an educational philosophy of
learning through first-hand experience; Anna Billings Gallup, who became
curator in 1903, was the Museum's driving force over 35 years; she
challenged the staff to enhance children's understanding of themselves
and the world in which they live, and to create an interdisciplinary
museum experience at the intersection of arts, sciences and world
cultures; and
WHEREAS, Love Double Dutch! was written by Doreen Spicer-Dannelly,
producer of Disney Channel's animated series "The Proud Family" and the
movie "Jump In!"; and
WHEREAS, At this exciting event, families can listen to Doreen
Spicer-Dannelly read from her new book and learn about the main
character, McKayla, a Double Dutch enthusiast who tries to make it to
the National Double Dutch Jump-off; families are then invited to have
their books signed by this illustrious author, and attend and
participate in various Double Dutch performances, workshops, art
activities, and dance to live music by DJs; and
WHEREAS, The expert staff of Brooklyn Children's Museum, are and
always have been characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled
enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence, and
accordingly merit the applause of the citizens of the State of New York;
and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous direction of President and CEO Stephanie
Wilchfort, BCM looks forward to many years of continued and purposeful
growth; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when cultural
organizations of such exceptional value and accomplishment are brought
to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the
citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Brooklyn Children's Museum upon the occasion of hosting the
launch party for Love Double Dutch! on April 7, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Stephanie Wilchfort, President and CEO, Brooklyn
Children's Museum, and Doreen Spicer-Dannelly, Author, Love Double
Dutch!.
