COMMENDING Midwin Charles, Esq. upon the occasion
of her designation for special recognition by the
Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice on April
30, 2018

WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in this Nation, and the
great State of New York, is reflective of the purposeful lives and good
works of those civic-minded community members who dedicate their lives
and careers to the service of others; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Midwin Charles, Esq. upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition by the Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice to
be celebrated at its Annual Spring Benefit on Monday, April 30, 2018, at
Midtown Loft & Terrace in New York, New York; and

WHEREAS, The Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice is a public
high school which serves a population of at-risk, low-income students
from historically disadvantaged communities across Brooklyn and other
boroughs; and

WHEREAS, Midwin Charles earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from
Syracuse University and her Juris Doctor from the American University,
Washington College of Law; and

WHEREAS, After graduating, Midwin Charles served as a law clerk for
the United States Court of Appeals for Sixth Circuit Judge Eric L. Clay;
she was also the A. Leon Higginbotham, Jr. Research Fellow in Social
Justice at Harvard Law School, under the supervision of Charles J.
Ogletree, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, The founder of Midwin Charles & Associates LLC and a
contributor at Essence Magazine, Midwin Charles regularly provides
commentary on law, pop culture, and politics for various television
shows and media outlets including CNN, HLN, MSNBC, Bloomberg TV, TV One,
and New York's 107.5 WBLS; and

WHEREAS, A true asset to her community, Midwin Charles is a vital
member of the Dean's Diversity Council for the American University,
Washington College of Law and serves on the Board of Women in
Entertainment Empowerment Network (WEEN); and

WHEREAS, Midwin Charles has also been a long-time supporter and
friend to the students of Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice; and

WHEREAS, A singular asset to all of the citizens she has served in
the community of the State of New York, Midwin Charles' life and career
are a portrait of preeminence in public service, and present a role
model for all who aspire to a career in public service; now, therefore,
be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Midwin Charles, Esq. upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition by the Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice on
April 30, 2018; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Midwin Charles, Esq.
