COMMEMORATING the 50th Anniversary of the Broome
County Urban League

WHEREAS, In the course of the evolving development of this Empire
State, if the ingredients of shared concern and responsive endeavor
combine in the commitment to society, there have emerged among the
distinguished citizens of the State of New York certain organizations
which warrant special recognition; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commend those
illustrious organizations of the State of New York whose focus and
intent have made a substantial impact on the quality of life in their
communities; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Broome County Urban League; and

WHEREAS, Founded in 1968, the Broome County Urban League (BCUL) is
located in Binghamton, New York; in 1970, BCUL became an affiliate of
the National Urban League; and

WHEREAS, For five decades, BCUL has strived to empower the community
by changing the lives of those who live in it; this vital non-profit
organization focuses primarily on youth, catering to the needs of
children ages five-18 through after-school and summer programs,
tutoring/mentoring, technology classes, and workforce development;
however, BCUL is always ready and willing to help any man, woman or
child who is looking for assistance; and

WHEREAS, In addition to its education and workforce programs, BCUL
provides family support, health insurance, prescription cards, food,
clothing, housing and utility bill assistance, as well as aid in many
other areas; and

WHEREAS, BCUL also offers comprehensive referral services to other
community agencies and private industries such as The Center For Help,
Family Services, Online Job Board, Youth Services, Workforce
Development, Young Professionals, WJOB-FM 93.3, and The Urban Star; and

WHEREAS, Over its distinguished 50 year history, the Broome County
Urban League has demonstrated continuous assistance to the residents and
communities which it serves; and

WHEREAS, The success of the Broome County Urban League is in direct
correlation to the efforts of its President and CEO Jennifer Lesko, the
BCUL staff, and its board members, whose involvement is, and always has
been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled
enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all
endeavors on behalf of the organization and the community it serves; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our

attention, they should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Broome County Urban League; and
be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Jennifer Lesko, President and CEO, Broome County Urban
League.
