HONORING Dr. John McCabe for his dedicated
commitment and loyal service to Upstate University
Hospital

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished citizens within our midst, who have devoted
themselves to improving the health and well-being of the citizens of
their communities; and

WHEREAS, It also is the custom of this Legislative Body to
acknowledge the significant milestones in the distinguished careers of
such esteemed individuals of this noble Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Within every community of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment and dedication,
deserve the respect and admiration of their community for their
exemplary contributions and service on behalf of others; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Dr. John McCabe for his decades of service to Upstate University
Hospital in Syracuse, New York, and to improving the health and
well-being of the citizens of Central New York and beyond; and

WHEREAS, Dr. John McCabe, a current resident of Cazenovia, New York,
received his medical degree from the State University of New York (SUNY)
Upstate Medical University in 1979; subsequently, he completed his
residency at Wright State University School of Medicine in 1982; and

WHEREAS, When Dr. John McCabe returned to Upstate University
Hospital in 1987, he began as an emergency room doctor and was the only
residency-trained emergency medicine physician within a 250-mile radius
of the City of Syracuse; and

WHEREAS, After serving in various leadership roles at Upstate
University Hospital and SUNY Upstate Medical University, Dr. John McCabe
was eventually named in 2009 to the position of Chief Executive Officer
(CEO) of Upstate University Hospital and Senior Vice President for
Clinical Affairs; and

WHEREAS, As CEO, Dr. John McCabe oversaw the entire operation of the
hospital sites and had ultimate administrative responsibility for the
hospital and its ambulatory locations; and

WHEREAS, During his tenure as CEO, Dr. John McCabe directed multiple
changes and improvements at the hospital, including Upstate's
acquisition of Community General Hospital, the opening of the Golisano
Children's Hospital, the hospital's East Tower expansion, and the
opening of the Upstate Cancer Center, as well as the launch of an
electronic medical record system, which now allows patients to access
their medical records from smart phones, tablets and home computers; and

WHEREAS, Dr. John McCabe will voluntarily leave the position of CEO
of Upstate University Hospital on January 17, 2017; and

WHEREAS, In his 23-year history at Upstate University Hospital, Dr.
John McCabe also developed an emergency medicine residency training
program and oversaw the expansion of the hospital's emergency room,
among other accomplishments; and

WHEREAS, Besides his regional impact, Dr. John McCabe has and
continues to be a leader at the national level, serving as chair of the
board of directors of the American Board of Medical Specialties, the
organization that oversees the certification of physician specialists in
the United States; he is also a member of American College of Physician
Executives, the American Medical Association, and the Undersea and
Hyperbaric Medicine Society; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those
dedicated professionals, who devote their lives to the health and
well-being of a society, are worthy of the praise of the State of New
York for their commitment and immeasurable contributions; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. John McCabe for his decades of service to Upstate University
Hospital, and to improving the health and well-being of the citizens of
Central New York and beyond; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
hereby transmitted to Dr. John McCabe.
