COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of Maxwell
Memorial Library in Camillus, New York

WHEREAS, Libraries, and the educational and social benefits they
confer, play a vital role in the development of their neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, It is the tradition of the State of New York to pay tribute
to those exemplary institutions within our midst that are dedicated to
serving the community and the needs of its citizenry; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in according with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Maxwell Memorial Library to be
celebrated on Saturday, May 19, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Maxwell Memorial Library will commemorate 100 years of
success with the celebration to include visual and oral history exhibits
of Camillus and the library, musical entertainment, children's events,
and a library birthday cake; and

WHEREAS, Maxwell Memorial Library, a member of the Onondaga County
Public Libraries System, is dedicated to providing facilities and
materials for education, recreation, personal growth and information to
the residents of the Town of Camillus and the western side of Onondaga
County; and

WHEREAS, Established as Camillus Library on May 26, 1918, Maxwell
Memorial Library moved to its present location on the corner of Genesee
Street and Leroy Street in the Village of Camillus in 1928; and

WHEREAS, Thirty years later, in 1958, the Camillus Library was
renamed Maxwell Memorial Library in in honor of librarian Mary Maxwell;
and

WHEREAS, The building where Maxwell Memorial Library currently
resides was built around 1868, and formerly served as a church; and

WHEREAS, Maxwell Memorial Library offers a wide variety of
contemporary materials, programs and services, including: an in-depth
collection of best-selling books in print, audio and digital formats;
popular DVDs and streaming movies; children's materials, computers, and
creative activities; free public computer and wi-fi access; print
periodicals; extensive research materials online and in print; and
informative, educational, and entertaining programs for adults, teens
and children; and

WHEREAS, Maxwell Memorial Library also offers opportunities to
become involved with book clubs, preschool and toddler story times, and
volunteer service; additionally, the library has an excellent summer
reading program for babies through teens, with the ever-popular Wild
Wednesday family nights; and

WHEREAS, Maxwell Memorial Library is supported by an active Friends
group that holds regular fundraising events for the library; The Friends
of Maxwell Memorial Library will be celebrating their 25th year of
existence in 2018; and

WHEREAS, For the past 100 years, Maxwell Memorial Library has
informed, enriched and empowered every person in its community by
promoting easy access to a vast array of ideas and information, and by
supporting an informed citizenry, lifelong learning and a love of
reading, while providing people-oriented library services; and

WHEREAS, Steeped in distinguished history, Maxwell Memorial Library
may take just pride in its growth, as it looks forward to continuing to
serve the educational, cultural, and intellectual needs of the
community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Maxwell Memorial Library; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Amanda Perrine, Director of the Maxwell Memorial Library.
