HONORING George R. Broadhead upon the occasion of
his designation as Deputy Grand Marshal of
Brooklyn's 151st Annual Kings County Memorial Day
Parade on May 28, 2018

WHEREAS, Each and every city, town, village and hamlet within its
borders resonates with the rich and noble history of New York State and
this nation; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend events which symbolize the historical, social and cultural
development of this great State and embody the spirit of the principles
upon which this nation was founded, and to applaud individuals who have
dedicated their life's work in support and furtherance of those
principles; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
George R. Broadhead upon the occasion of his designation as Deputy Grand
Marshal of Brooklyn's 151st Annual Kings County Memorial Day Parade, to
be held on Monday, May 28, 2018; and

WHEREAS, On Memorial Day, observed annually on the last Monday of
the month of May, we honor those Americans who gave their lives in
defense of their country, whether in the Civil War which divided our
nation or in times of war since that time, and in times of peace, in
police actions and minor skirmishes, in peacekeeping roles and in
missions to foreign lands to uphold the cherished principles of liberty
and democracy upon which our grand Republic was founded; and

WHEREAS, A fitting choice for Deputy Grand Marshal of Brooklyn's
151st Annual Kings County Memorial Day Parade, George R. Broadhead
proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine
Corps; and

WHEREAS, George Russell Broadhead was born in the Park Slope
neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York; he and his family moved to Gerritsen
Beach in 1938; and

WHEREAS, After graduating from high school, George R. Broadhead
enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in Korea; for his
meritorious service, Corporal Broadhead was the recipient of numerous
awards and accolades including the Silver Star Medal, the Purple Heart
Medal, Combat Action Badge, two Naval Unit Citations, Good Conduct
Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit
Citation, Korean Campaign w/3 stars, UN Medal, Korean War Service Medal
and the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal; and

WHEREAS, While stationed at Marine Corps Base at Quantico, George R.
Broadhead completed a year of college at George Washington University;
after retiring on disability, he resumed his college studies at St.
John's University College in Brooklyn; and

WHEREAS, During this time, George R. Broadhead began his long career
in publishing as Feature and Managing Editor for St. John's News and
Editor of the college literary magazine Epitome; he also worked
part-time in Macy's advertising department for three years; and

WHEREAS, In 1960, George R. Broadhead was hired by McGraw-Hill as an
Editor of Coal Age, and Engineering & Mining journal promotional
newsletters; he then worked in the advertising sales department with the
Los Angeles Herald Examiner; he also published his poetry in various
magazines and newspapers; and

WHEREAS, George R. Broadhead returned to the east coast and joined
the advertising sales staff of American Artist Magazine; he was then
promoted to a position with Billboard magazine; in 1968, he was named
southern manager for Billboard magazine, and relocated to Nashville,
Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, In 1974, George R. Broadhead began to work for Newhouse
Newspaper in New York and then West Coast Management; after his
retirement from the newspaper, he returned to Gerritsen Beach in 2001;
and

WHEREAS, George R. Broadhead quickly became a vital and important
part of his community; he was an officer and then President of the
Gerritsen Beach Property Owners Association, a position he held for
seven years, including the period during and after Hurricane Sandy; and

WHEREAS, For three years, George R. Broadhead has served on the
Gerritsen Beach Volunteer Fire Department Fire Council, and was the
Commander of VFW Post 107, as well as County Commander of Kings County
Brooklyn Council; in 2011, he was nominated for the New York State
Senate Veterans Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, George R. Broadhead was instrumental in the success of the
Centennial Ceremony for the Prisoner Martyr Ship Monument at Fort Green
Park; he secured the Gerritsen Beach Marching Band, VFW Post 107 Color
Guard and acted as the event Grand Marshal; and

WHEREAS, Currently, George R. Broadhead is serving his third term as
President of the Society of Old Brooklynites and is a member of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and American
Legion Post No. 1 in Paris, France; and

WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his four children, five
grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, all of whom have shown him
love and support and rejoice in his many achievements; and

WHEREAS, As we observe and remember our deceased veterans on
Memorial Day, we recall their brave and noble deeds which have served to
maintain our most precious and cherished freedoms and honor those who
continue to work diligently to support and sustain them; now, therefore,
be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor George R. Broadhead upon the occasion of his designation as Deputy
Grand Marshal of Brooklyn's 151st Annual Kings County Memorial Day
Parade; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to George R. Broadhead.
