Senate Resolution No. 5324

COMMEMORATING the 110th Anniversary of Saint
Saviour Catholic Academy of Brooklyn, New York
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate an enduring
pursuit of excellence in the education of the youth of the Empire State;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 110th Anniversary of Saint Saviour Catholic Academy of
Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, In October of 1905, Bishop McDonnell informed Father James
J. Flood, a native of Ireland who was presiding at St. Agnes in
Rockville Centre, that he had been selected to establish a new parish in
Park Slope, Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, Two months later, Father Flood purchased the Eng Mansion, a
red brick building on the corner of 8th Avenue and 7th Street, and
converted it into a temporary chapel and rectory; he then purchased the
corner lot at 8th Avenue and 6th Street from the Turnbull family; and
WHEREAS, Ground was broken for the lower church in February of 1906,
during which time the Parish continued to flourish and grow, making the
need for a school imperative; and
WHEREAS, In September of 1906, Eng Mansion was transformed into a
temporary convent and school; Sister Pauline of the Order of Saint
Joseph was appointed to take charge of Saint Saviour Institute, which
was thereafter remembered as "The Little Red Schoolhouse"; and
WHEREAS, Ground was broken for the 6th Street school in July of
1908, and in September of the following year, the school was opened with
124 pupils and led by the School Sisters of Notre Dame with Sister Marty
Petra as Superior; and
WHEREAS, The cornerstone was laid for the upper church in April of
1912, and the church as it is today was officially dedicated in late
September of 1918; and
WHEREAS, In May of 1956, ground was once again broken for the 7th
Street school; over the years the elementary students were moved to the
7th Street school, and the 6th Street school became Saint Saviour High
School, a college preparatory school for young women; and
WHEREAS, Saint Saviour Elementary School moved to an academy model
governed by a Board of Directors in September of 2012, and was renamed
Saint Saviour Catholic Academy; and
WHEREAS, Today, Saint Saviour Catholic Academy prepares students
from Nursery to Grade 8 for higher education; and
WHEREAS, In accordance with Catholic values, Saint Saviour Catholic
Academy educates students in mind, body and spirit, and welcomes and
supports the diversity of ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic background,
and/or learning style; and
WHEREAS, Within this culturally diverse community, Saint Saviour
Catholic Academy creates an environment where each child discovers a
unique enthusiasm for learning, academic excellence, and social
responsibility to reach his or her highest potential; and
WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of its Principal, Susan Walsh,
Saint Saviour Catholic Academy educates children in a nurturing and
supportive environment paired with the spiritual teachings of
Catholicism, and presents Catholic faith and service in an
age-appropriate manner, encouraging students to give and care for
others; and
WHEREAS, The steadfast and unyielding commitment of parents,
educators and administrators to provide the highest quality education
for students has become the hallmark and tradition of Saint Saviour
Catholic Academy; and
WHEREAS, Within the 21st Century, Saint Saviour Catholic Academy
stands prepared to reach out, in earnest and enthusiastic quest of its
mission, to promote the maximum growth of every student, establishing
standards and building skills which will carry its students and the
citizens of its community into the future; and
WHEREAS, Saint Saviour Catholic Academy is proudly aware of its
distinguished past, eager to fulfill its present commitment to parents,
students and the community, and planning with vision and purpose for the
ebb and swell of growth and change it will encounter in the years to
come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 110th Anniversary of Saint Saviour Catholic Academy of
Brooklyn, New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Susan Walsh, Principal, Saint Saviour Catholic Academy,
Brooklyn, New York.
