COMMENDING Katepalli Sreenivasan Ph.D. upon the
occasion of stepping down after almost six years of
distinguished service as an Educator

WHEREAS, New York State's commitment to education is unparalleled;
its history and stature are secured by the superlative caliber of its
educational professionals and the students they inspire; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
the significant milestones in the distinguished careers of those
outstanding educational leaders, whose dedication and achievements have
been instrumental in developing character and academic excellence in the
young people of New York State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Katepalli Sreenivasan Ph.D. upon the occasion of stepping down
after almost six years of distinguished service as an Educator; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion will be celebrated at a reception
held in his honor on Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at the Brooklyn Museum in
Brooklyn, New York; and

WHEREAS, Educators like Dr. Katepalli Sreenivasan have provided a
tremendous service to the future of our State and Nation, inspiring
generations of young people in their educational journeys and ensuring
their success in their future years; and

WHEREAS, Katepalli Sreenivasan earned his B.E. (first rank) in
mechanical engineering from Bangalore University, his M.E. (first rank)
and Ph.D. (P.S. Narayana Medal) in aeronautical engineering from the
Indian Institute of Science; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Katepalli Sreenivasan began his long and distinguished
career as a faculty member with Yale University, first in the department
of engineering and applied science and, subsequently, in several other
capacities such as the Harold W. Cheel Professor of Mechanical
Engineering from 1988-2002, and held joint appointments in the
departments of physics, applied physics and mathematics; and

WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Katepalli Sreenivasan served as Chair of
the mechanical engineering department from 1987-1992, and the acting
Chairman of the council of engineering in 1989; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Katepalli Sreenivasan's post-doctoral work included two
years in Australia and at Johns Hopkins University; he has been a
visiting professor at Caltech, Rockefeller University, Cambridge
University, and the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, among
others; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Katepalli Sreenivasan then held the title of Director
of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy,
and was concurrently on the faculty of the University of Maryland, where

he was Distinguished University Professor, Glenn L. Martin Professor of
Engineering and Professor of physics, as well as Director of the
Institute for Physical Science and Technology; and

WHEREAS, In 2009, Dr. Katepalli Sreenivasan joined the staff of NYU,
serving as its Provost for 13 months; in November of 2012, he was
appointed acting President of NYU Tandon School of Engineering; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Katepalli Sreenivasan has also held the titles of Dean
of Engineering at New York University and Executive Vice Provost in
charge of science and technology; in this capacity, he has focused on
the development of faculty, research, and educational programs at the
School of Engineering, all in partnership with other centers of
scientific research throughout NYU; and

WHEREAS, Moreover, Dr. Katepalli Sreenivasan oversaw the merger
between NYU and Polytechnic University; created new research centers, in
fields as far ranging as wireless technology to transportation and Al to
Augmented reality; recruited excellent new faculty; solidified and built
upon the existing foundation the school had in Brooklyn; increased
diversity in the student body; and oversaw the revitalization of campus
facilities; and

WHEREAS, An active researcher, Dr. Katepalli Sreenivasan continues
his work in turbulence, cryogenic helium and nonlinear dynamics, and has
retained his NYU appointment as a university professor, jointly in
physics and mathematics; and

WHEREAS, For his steadfast and unremitting commitment to his role as
an educator and his profession, Dr. Katepalli Sreenivasan was the
recipient of numerous awards and accolades including the Guggenheim
Fellowship; the Otto Laporte Memorial Award of American Physical
Society; the TWAS Medal Lecture in Engineering Science, Distinguished
Alumnus Award and Centennial Professorship of the Indian Institute of
Science; Sir C.V. Raman Visiting Professorship of the Indian Academy of
Sciences; International Prize and Gold Medal in memory of Professors
Modesto Panetti and Carlo Ferrari; Academia delle Scienze di Torino,
Italy; National Order of Scientific Merit by the Brazilian Government
and the Academy of Sciences; UNESCO Medal for Promoting International
Scientific Cooperation and World Peace by the World Heritage Centre,
Florence, Italy; President Dr. Zakir Husain Memorial Award by the Duty
Society and the Indian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics;
Honorary Membership, Academia Torre e Tasso, Duino-Aurisina, Trieste,
Italy; Melvin Jones Fellow of the Lions Club; Dwight Nicholson Medal of
the American Physical Society for human outreach; 2009 Nusselt-Reynolds
Prize from the Assembly of World Conference on Experimental Heat
Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics; and the 2009 AAAS Award
for International Scientific Cooperation, as well as the 2011
Multicultural Leadership Award of the National Diversity Council; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Katepalli Sreenivasan has been elected to the Indian
Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy, the Academy
of Sciences for the Developing World, and the African Academy of
Sciences, the US National Academy of Sciences, the US National Academy
of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the
Accademia die Lincei in Italy; and

WHEREAS, Within the National Academies, Dr. Katepalli Sreenivasan
has served on the NAE Committee on Membership, the Mechanical
Engineering Section and the Mechanical Engineering Peer Committee; the
NAS Class Ill Membership Committee; the NRC Committee on Human Rights of
the NAS, NAE, and IOM; the Committee on Condensed-Matter and Materials
Physics; and the Nonlinear Dynamics and Fractals Committee; and on the
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Editorial Board; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Katepalli Screenivasan has clearly had an enduring
impact on the students of New York University, as well as on the
community-at-large, and accordingly merits recognition and applause for
his impressive dedication to others; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals who work to support our proud tradition of
institutions of higher education by providing their skills and talents
to our colleges; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Katepalli Sreenivasan Ph.D. upon the occasion of his retirement
after almost six years of distinguished service as an Educator, and to
wish him continued success in all his future endeavors; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Katepalli Sreenivasan Ph.D.
