HONORING Ronald Schultz upon the occasion of being
inducted into the Rome Sports Hall of Fame on July
29, 2018

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves through their
exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Ronald Schultz upon the occasion of being inducted into the Rome Sports
Hall of Fame on Sunday, July 29, 2018, at the Inn at the Beeches, Rome,
New York; and

WHEREAS, As a Rome Free Academy (RFA) football player, Ronald
Schultz was in the starting lineup as a two way lineman for the Black
Knights during its opening game in September of 1950, which 7,000 fans
attended at the new RFA Stadium; and

WHEREAS, Ronald Schultz was described in the press of the day as a
physical, hard hitting defenseman who got his share of points for RFA's
powerhouse hockey teams of the late 1940s and early 1950s; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his illustrious baseball career with RFA, Ronald
Schultz was a fleet footed outfielder and a catcher with an amazingly
strong arm; as a senior, he set a long lasting and eye popping record to
win the Central Oneida League batting title with a 515 average; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, Ronald Schultz was the number four hitter for
the Rome American Legion baseball squad during the summer months; and

WHEREAS, Ronald Schultz was invited to attend the then New York
Baseball Giant's tryout camp in February of 1951, by Baseball Hall of
Famer Carl Hubbell; he never made the tryout because of a draft notice,
but the invitation remains a true testament to his skills as a baseball
player and athlete; and

WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his studies, Ronald Schultz played
baseball for the Rome State School and had a year with the Rome Colonels
before settling down with his high school sweetheart, the former Nancy
Curtis; and

WHEREAS, During this time, Ronald Schultz went to work for the Rome
Sentinel, retiring as press foreman after 30 years of dedicated service;
and

WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Nancy, and their
three children, as well as two grandsons, Brandon and Chris, who have
all shown him love and support and rejoice in his many achievements; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such outstanding athletic accomplishments are brought to

our attention, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Ronald Schultz upon the occasion of being inducted into the Rome
Sports Hall of Fame on July 29, 2018; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Ronald Schultz.
