PAYING tribute to the life and community service
of Angelo Falcon, founder and president of the
National Institute for Latino Policy

WHEREAS, Citizens across our State and Nation continue to be
inspired by the efforts of individuals who commit their lives to
uplifting their communities; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to pay tribute to the life
and community service of Angelo Falcon, founder and president of the
National Institute for Latino Policy, who passed away on Thursday, May
24, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Angelo Falcon was a devoted Latino advocate who dedicated
most of his life to the empowerment of Latinos across the country, and
specifically in New York; and

WHEREAS, Angelo Falcon founded the National Institute for Latino
Policy, a nonpartisan center that provides policy analysis and advocacy
on critical social issues facing the Latino community in the United
States; and

WHEREAS, Angelo Falcon worked tirelessly to generate and utilize
concrete data on Puerto Rican and Latino civic engagement in New York to
elevate issues to leaders in government and across the State; and

WHEREAS, Angelo Falcon advocated for the needs of Latinos across New
York through his research and writing, including co-editing the book
Boricuas in Gotham: Puerto Ricans in the Making of Modern New York and
authoring the essays "Black and Puerto Rican Politics in New York City:
Race and Ethnicity in a Changing Urban Context" and "Puerto Rican
Political Participation: New York City and Puerto Rico"; and

WHEREAS, Angelo Falcon was elected Chair of the Census Advisory
Committee of the Hispanic population and the Chair of the Steering
Committee of the Census Information Centers (CIC) Program of the Census
Bureau in 2009, where he raised awareness about the distinct problems
facing Hispanic and Latino communities; and

WHEREAS, Angelo Falcon became a vocal advocate for Puerto Rico's
relief efforts after Hurricane Maria in September of 2017, and devoted
resources to bringing attention to the needs of Puerto Ricans on the
island and in New York; and

WHEREAS, Angelo Falcon dedicated his life to uplifting and engaging
Latinos at varying levels of government, as well as to holding leaders
accountable through advocacy and research; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to convey its
grateful appreciation in recognition of a community leader who dedicated
his purposeful life and career in faithful service to his great State;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
pay tribute to the life and selfless community service of Angelo Falcon
who sadly passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2018; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the colleagues of Angelo Falcon at the National Institute
for Latino Policy.
