MEMORIALIZING Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim
July 2018, as Slow Down and Move Over Awareness
Month in the State of New York

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
official months that are set aside to increase awareness of serious
issues that affect the lives of citizens of New York State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim July 2018, as Slow Down
and Move Over Awareness Month in the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, The Move Over Law requires motorists to move over and
change lanes to give safe clearance to law enforcement officers,
firefighters, ambulances, utility workers, and in some cases, tow-truck
drivers; these people are usually the first responders; and

WHEREAS, In the five years since the passage of the Move Over Law,
more than 77,000 violation tickets have been issued; and

WHEREAS, First responders are put in danger and sometimes hit with
moving vehicles in the line of duty on roads and highways; and

WHEREAS, First responders and other highway service members put
their lives at risk in order to maintain the safety and maintenance of
our roads; and

WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater awareness of the
Move Over Law to ensure the safety of our first responders; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim July 2018, as Slow Down
and Move Over Awareness Month in the State of New York; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of
New York.
