HONORING former Brooklyn Borough President Howard
Golden for more than 40 years of public service and
leadership to the Borough of Brooklyn and for his
service to our country as a veteran of World War II

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
former Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden for more than 40 years
of public service and leadership to the Borough of Brooklyn and for his
service to our country as a veteran of World War II; and

WHEREAS, Howard Golden was recognized by the Brooklyn Chamber of
Commerce at its 100th Anniversary Event; and

WHEREAS, Howard Golden served as the 16th Brooklyn Borough President
from January 3, 1977 until December 31, 2001; and

WHEREAS, Born in Flatbush, Brooklyn in 1925, Howard Golden graduated
from Stuyvesant High School and New York University; he went on to
attend Brooklyn Law School on the G.I. Bill, graduating in 1958; and

WHEREAS, Howard Golden valiantly served his country as a member of
the United States Navy during World War II, and was part of the Normandy
Invasion on June 6, 1944; and

WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Howard Golden demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore, the highest respect of his State and Nation; and

WHEREAS, Prior to becoming Brooklyn Borough President, Howard Golden
served as City Councilman for the Borough Park section of Brooklyn for
almost seven years; and

WHEREAS, During the November 1976 election, the City Council
selected Howard Golden to serve as interim Borough President; during
this time he decided to run for the office and in November of the
following year he handily won a four-way race by a wide margin; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his long and illustrious career, Howard Golden
held various party positions; he was a genuine New York power broker and
many of his political proteges achieved higher office through his
personal intervention; and

WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Aileen, and his two
daughters, who have all shown him love and support and rejoice in his
many achievements; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to publicly
recognize those extraordinary individuals who have made significant
contributions to the success and progress of society in the course of
their life's work; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor former Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden for more than 40
years of public service and leadership to the Borough of Brooklyn and
for his service to our country as a veteran of World War II; and

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Howard Golden.
