CONGRATULATING Dominick Welch upon the occasion of
setting a new Western New York Boys Basketball
all-time scoring record

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body takes pleasure in honoring talented
high school athletes who distinguish themselves and their community
through outstanding athletic performance; and

WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical
development of the young people of this State, preparing them for the
future by instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a
standard of healthy living, imparting a desire for success and
developing a sense of fair play and competition; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to
congratulate Dominick Welch upon the occasion of setting a new Western
New York Boys Basketball all-time scoring record; and

WHEREAS, A student at Cheektowaga Central High School, Dominick
Welch is an exceptionally talented basketball player; throughout his
five-year playing career, he scored 2,376 points; and

WHEREAS, During his junior year, Dominick Welch averaged 29.3 points
per game, and during his senior year, he increased his average to 29.7
points and 12.4 rebounds per game; and

WHEREAS, On February 28, 2017, Dominick Welch broke the Western New
York career scoring record of 2,355 with a layup in the third quarter
against South Park High School; the previous record holder, was in the
stands to witness Dominick break his record; and

WHEREAS, After sinking his milestone basket, the game was stopped
and Dominick Welch's parents were brought onto the court to join him as
he was presented with a commemorative ball for his outstanding
achievement; and

WHEREAS, After the applause died down, the game continued and
Dominick Welch scored 45 points in the final game of the season and his
high school career; and

WHEREAS, In addition to breaking the Western New York scoring
record, Dominick Welch was a member of the All-Western New York first
team, and was one of seven finalists to be named Mr. Basketball of New
York, an award given to the top senior in the state by the Basketball
Coaches Association of New York; and

WHEREAS, Sports competition instills the values of teamwork, pride
and accomplishment, and Dominick Welch has clearly made a contribution
to the spirit of excellence which is a tradition of his school; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Dominick Welch upon the occasion of setting a new Western
New York Boys Basketball all-time scoring record, and to commend him for
the enduring honor he has brought to his family, his school and his
community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dominick Welch.
