HONORING Jane Schreibman upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the
highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New
York State Senate
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
caring concern and heroic acts of exemplary citizens who take prompt and
appropriate action in emergency situations, and in doing so, help others
to avert life-threatening danger; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Jane Schreibman upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New
York State Senate; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, On the evening of September 17, 2016, a bomb went off in a
dumpster on 23rd Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, injuring 29 people
and shattering windows in the adjacent VISIONS at Selis Manor, a
supportive housing development for blind individuals; and
WHEREAS, Jane Schreibman, who lives four blocks north, received a
call warning her of this nearby explosion, and without hesitation or
regard for her own safety, headed outside to assess the situation; and
WHEREAS, Once outside, Jane Schreibman noticed a cooking pot arrayed
with wires left on her street; she promptly called authorities who
utilized a police robot to safely deactivate and remove the rigged
device; and
WHEREAS, A resident on West 27th Street in Chelsea for 36 years,
Jane Schreibman's quick thinking was instrumental in the successful
diversion of another explosion, saving countless lives; and
WHEREAS, Praised for her brave actions, Jane Schreibman demonstrated
her true character and genuine compassion for the welfare of others,
personifying, by virtue of her actions, the collective concern of
ordinary citizens across the community of the State of New York who
voluntarily respond when others are in need; and
WHEREAS, Justly recognized as a hero, Jane Schreibman richly merits
the admiration of this Legislative Body and her community for her
consummate courage and heroic actions; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Jane Schreibman upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Jane Schreibman.
