Senate Resolution No. 933

COMMEMORATING the 150th Anniversary of The
Salamanca Press
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the proud and distinguished histories of the people,
communities and organizations which comprise the noble body of this
great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of The Salamanca Press; and
WHEREAS, The Salamanca Press began on the corner of Washington and
Monroe streets in Ellicottville in 1867, and shortly after moved to
Little Valley in 1868, before opening a Salamanca branch in 1873; and
WHEREAS, During its early years, The Salamanca Press was known as
The Cattaraugus Republican and printed papers on a weekly basis;
eventually it changed to printing daily in 1904; and
WHEREAS, In 1926, the then Cattaraugus Republican changed its name
to The Salamanca Republican-Press, and finally changing its name again
in 1981 to The Salamanca Press; and
WHEREAS, The founder, Augustine W. Ferrin, started off his career in
journalism as the city editor of the Buffalo Express at the young age of
22; he started The Cattaraugus Republican after purchasing The
Springville Herald in 1867; and
WHEREAS, The Salamanca Press was originally kept in the family of
Augstine W. Ferrin who sold his interest in the company to his
brother-in-law, Blanchard B. Weber; and
WHEREAS, Following Blanchard Weber, his son, Matthew, became the
editor of the paper in 1902; his son, Latham, followed; the family
tradition ended when Weber Austin became the fifth publisher of the
paper; and
WHEREAS, The Weber family eventually sold their interest in the
company in 1976 to the Bradford Publishing Corporation, who still
control it today; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly
recognize and honor milestones in the history of newspapers large and
small in this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of The Salamanca Press; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Salamanca Press.
