Assembly Resolution No. 1339

CONGRATULATING Peg Churchill upon the occasion of
her retirement after many years of dedicated public
service to Wayne County

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate Peg Churchill upon the occasion of her retirement after
many years of dedicated public service to Wayne County; and

WHEREAS, Peg Churchill served Wayne County with loyalty, honor and
distinction, and was governed by a keen sense of duty and always showed
a unique grasp of human problems in her official acts; and

WHEREAS, Born in Rochester, New York, Peg Churchill lived in France
as a small child while her father, an Army Captain and Physician, was
stationed in Paris; and

WHEREAS, In 1954, Peg Churchill and her family moved to Walworth,
New York, where she attended school; she graduated from Nazareth College
before earning her Master's degree in English from Brockport and the
University of Rochester; and

WHEREAS, Peg and Tim Churchill were united in marriage in 1972; the
proud parents of four children and the loving grandparents of five
grandchildren, the couple was married for 41 years until Tim's death in
2017; and

WHEREAS, Peg Churchill was a Teacher in Penfield, New York, before
serving for four years on the Walworth Town Board; she went on to become
the first woman Supervisor in Walworth; and

WHEREAS, In 1997, Peg Churchill and her husband started the Wayne
weekly newspaper with a focus on arts, recreation and cultural events,
and with the vision to print only positivity; one year later, she became
the part-time Executive Director of the Erie Canal Cultural Center
(ECCC), working on the renovation of the Hammet Building on the Erie
Canal in Lyons; and

WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to her
community, Peg Churchill served for eight years as a member of the
Western Erie Canal Heritage Corridor Planning Commission and the Western
Erie Canal Alliance; and

WHEREAS, Hired as a Planner in the Wayne County Planning Department
in 2001, Peg Churchill held the title of Executive Director of the
Industrial Development Agency (IDA) and Executive Director of three
other local development corporations: the Wayne Economic Development

Corporation, the Wayne Industrial Local Development Corporation and the
Wayne County Civil Facility Local Development Corporation; and

WHEREAS, This esteemed woman later became the Deputy Director of the
Economic Development and Planning Department and Director of the
Economic Development and Planning Department; and

WHEREAS, For many years, Peg Churchill rendered faithful,
conscientious and valuable service to Wayne County, earning the
admiration, esteem and affection of her colleagues; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the occurrence of such a compassionate
blending of strength, leadership, intellect, and commitment as that
demonstrated by Peg Churchill over a lifetime of sacrifice and
dedication to others; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Peg Churchill upon the occasion of her retirement after
many years of dedicated public service to Wayne County; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Peg Churchill.
