CONGRATULATING the New Rochelle High School Boys
Varsity Soccer Team, Head Coach Jarohan Garcia,
Assistant Coaches Gustavo Barbosa and Francis
McCarthy and Director of Athletics, Steve Young,
upon the occasion of winning the New York State
Class AA Boys Soccer Championship

WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be
achieved only through strenuous practice, team play and team spirit,
nurtured by dedicated coaching and strategic planning; and

WHEREAS, From the first team meeting held in August 2016, the New
Rochelle High School Huguenot Soccer Team set as their goal to rise to
the highest pinnacle of success possible in New York State high school
soccer; and

WHEREAS, The New Rochelle community places great value in sports,
academic success and achievement, both on and off the field, and have
long been filled with Huguenot Pride; and

WHEREAS, Generations of New Rochelle athletes have played Huguenot
varsity soccer, setting a high standard of excellence through effective
ball handling, passing and shooting with explosive speed and agility;
and

WHEREAS, The 2016 New Rochelle High School Huguenot Soccer Team is
led by Coach Jarohan Garcia, who harnessed the enviable soccer talent
and discipline and helped to enhance this remarkable tale of soccer
prowess with the team's statewide success this year; and

WHEREAS, The Huguenot Soccer players' 2016 record of athletic
success began when they emerged from a deep Class AA field in Section 1
by defeating Mahopac 2-0 in the opening round and then went on to defeat
the top-seeded Mamaroneck Tigers by a score of 2-1 in the quarterfinals,
after two overtime periods and a score of 4-3 in the penalty kick round;
and

WHEREAS, The eighth-seeded Huguenots then traveled to Scarsdale and,
after playing to a scoreless tie through two overtimes, advanced to the
Section 1 final with a 5-4 win in the penalty kick round; and

WHEREAS, Using their dramatic playoff run as a testament of the
team's character and unwillingness to shy away from difficult moments,
the Huguenots went on to clinch the Section 1 Championship with a 3-0
win over defending champion, Arlington at Lakeland High School; and

WHEREAS, With confidence at an all-time high, the Huguenots were
victorious in the Regional Semifinal with a 3-0 win over Ithaca and then
went on to the New York State Regional Championship, earning a hard
fought overtime win of 2-1 over Newburgh Free Academy; and

WHEREAS, Down three goals at halftime, the Huguenots rattled off
three goals in a span of seven minutes and then scored six minutes into

overtime to give the team a thrilling 4-3 victory over Calhoun in the
Class AA New York State Semifinal match on November 12, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Ending a 29-year state title drought, New Rochelle followed
up their dramatic comeback in the semifinals by defeating Fairport 2-1
in the NYSPHSAA's Class AA Boys Soccer Championship, at Middletown High
School on November 13, 2016; and

WHEREAS, The team, finishing the season with an outstanding 14-4-4
record, were loyally and enthusiastically supported by family, fans,
friends and the community at large; and

WHEREAS, Athletic competition instills the values of teamwork,
sportsmanship, pride and accomplishment; Head Coach Jarohan Garcia,
Assistant Coaches Gustavo Barbosa and Francis McCarthy, Director of
Athletics, Steve Young, and all of the outstanding athletes have clearly
made a contribution to the spirit of excellence that is a tradition of
their school; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate the members of the New Rochelle Boys Varsity Soccer Team:
Daniel Ayala, Ryan Goldstein, Christian Vargas, Cristian Torres,
Leonardo Vargas, Javier Amezcua, Felipe Tobon, Oscar Espinoza, Justin
Sirota, Andrew Sirota, Teylan Selman, Jonathan Reyes, Albert Forero,
Marcos Garcia, Ethan Manley, Omar Tejeda, Tremaine Bryan, Stevenson
Dieudonne, Adrian Morfin, Jose Corado, David Holliday, Cristian
Valencia, Davidson Modastil, David Lopez, Harwan Alzuabidi, Omar
Espinoza, Moises Reyes, and Manager Abiel Hernandez; Head Coach Jarohan
Garcia, Assistant Coaches Gustavo Barbosa and Francis McCarthy, Director
of Athletics, Steve Young, Principal Reginald Richardson and
Superintendent Dr. Brian Osborne on their outstanding season and overall
team record; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the members, manager, coaches and administrators of the
New Rochelle Boys Varsity Soccer Team.
