COMMEMORATING the 175th Anniversary of Fordham
University

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate an enduring
pursuit of excellence in higher education for the youth of this noble
Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 175th Anniversary of Fordham University; this momentous
occasion will be recognized with yearlong festivities, and will
culminate with the University's Founder's Day Celebration on Monday,
March 27, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Founded in 1841 by Archbishop of New York John Hughes,
Fordham University has grown tremendously from its humble beginnings of
only six students and two buildings, to more than 15,500 undergraduate,
graduate, and professional students across three campuses, an academic
center in London, and academic partnerships worldwide; and

WHEREAS, Fordham University, the Jesuit University of New York, is
now celebrating its 175th year of service in advancing the common good
through public service, its commitment to the pursuit of wisdom, and the
transmission of learning and research, offering education of the highest
quality; and

WHEREAS, This esteemed institution affirms the complementary roles
of faith and reason in the pursuit of wisdom and learning, fostering the
intellectual, ethical, and religious dimensions of its students to
prepare them for leadership in a global society; and

WHEREAS, While giving special attention to the living tradition of
Catholicism, Fordham University provides a broad and critical space for
diverse religious traditions to interact with each other and with
contemporary cultures, energetically welcoming students, faculty, and
staff of all religious traditions, and of no religious tradition, as
valued members of this community of study and dialogue; and

WHEREAS, Fordham University, drawing on its Jesuit heritage of
Christian Humanism, is committed to research, education, and service
that assist in the alleviation of poverty, the promotion of justice, the
protection of human rights, and respect for the shared local and global
environment; and

WHEREAS, Under the profound direction of President Joseph Michael
McShane, S.J., Fordham University has remained true to its commitment to
provide optimal facilities, the broadest range of professionally
accredited programs, and the maintenance of an outstanding teaching
facility; and

WHEREAS, Through its long and sustained commitment to excellence in
educational endeavor, Fordham University has so clearly advanced that
spirit of united purpose and shared concern which is the unalterable
manifestation of our American experience; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to join with
Fordham University in the celebration of its 175th Anniversary,
recognizing on this auspicious occasion that the quality and dignity of
life are empowered by the faithful and diligent efforts of such noble
institutions of learning; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 175th Anniversary of Fordham University, noting the
propriety of its goals, the constancy of its commitment and the
significance of its accomplishments in preparing the youth of today and
leaders of tomorrow; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Joseph Michael McShane, S.J., Fordham University.
