COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of Girl
Scouting in Albany, New York, on May 9, 2017

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord
with its long-standing traditions, honoring the youth of today, and
leaders of tomorrow, whose character and achievements exemplify the
ideals and values cherished by this great State and Nation; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting in Albany, New York,
to be celebrated on Tuesday, May 9, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Girl Scouting in the United States of America began on
March 12, 1912, when Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low organized the first
Girl Scout troop meeting of 18 girls in Savannah, Georgia; since then,
it has grown to 3.7 million members worldwide; and

WHEREAS, For over a century, Girl Scouting has cultivated in our
Nation's young people the goals of building solid values of sisterhood
and the importance of working with others, stimulating both mind and
body, instilling pride, and encouraging community service and success;
and

WHEREAS, Girl Scouting has expanded the horizons of the countless
hundreds of thousands who have participated in Scouting programs which
have made Scouting an American and international institution; and

WHEREAS, On May 9, 1917, Ruth Witte established Girl Scout Troop No.
1 in Albany; for 100 years, the Scouts have been taught to be leaders,
and about various subjects such as environmental awareness, healthy
living, science, technology, engineering and math; and

WHEREAS, Through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, Scouts are giving
the opportunity to become entrepreneurs, learn ethical decision making,
financial management, goal setting, and teamwork; and

WHEREAS, As the Girl Scout movement enters its second Century, it
reaffirms its mission to build girls of courage, confidence and
character who make the world a better place; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those organizations of high purpose and worthy
accomplishment whose endeavors have faithfully served the welfare of the
youth of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting in Albany, New York,
on May 9, 2017; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Girl Scout Troop No. 1, Girl Scouts of Northeastern New
York.
