HONORING Douglas W. Huntley upon the occasion of
his designation as recipient of the 2017 Good Scout
Award on May 10, 2017
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of
and publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and
character whose endeavors have enhanced the quality of education in the
great State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Douglas W. Huntley upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the 2017 Good Scout Award, to be celebrated at a dinner on May 10, 2017,
at the Great Escape Lodge in Queensbury, New York; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious award is bestowed upon individuals who
exemplify, in daily life, the ideals of the Boy Scouts of America, as
expressed in the Scout Oath and Law; the recipients are chosen for their
outstanding community service through leadership, as well as for the
respect and esteem in which their colleagues hold them; Douglas W.
Huntley is one such individual; and
WHEREAS, After graduating with his bachelor's degree and master's
degree in Education from Norwich University in Vermont, Douglas W.
Huntley went on to receive his Doctor of Education degree from the Sage
Graduate School of Educational Leadership in Albany, New York and his
Certificate of Advanced Studies in Educational Administration from the
University of Vermont; and
WHEREAS, Prior to holding the esteemed position of Superintendent of
the Queensbury Union Free School District, Douglas W. Huntley served as
the Superintendent of Schools for both the Massena Central School
District and the Hadley-Luzerne Central School District; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure at Queensbury Union Free School District,
Douglas W. Huntley tirelessly worked to ensure that it was consistently
ranked as an academically high-performing school, while maintaining one
of the lowest per pupil expenditures in the state; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Douglas W. Huntley led his district in various
school improvement initiatives including the International Baccalaureate
Diploma Programme, Project Lead the Way, Early College High School
(Advanced Manufacturing and Information Technology), Robotics, Algebra
for All, Readers and Writers Workshops (Columbia University) and
Innovation Space; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to education, Douglas W. Huntley also served on
numerous boards and committees such as the Executive Board of the
Capital Area School Development Association, the New York State Council
of School Superintendents (NYSCOSS) Executive Committee and the NYSCOSS
House of Delegates and Commissioner's Advisory Committee; and
WHEREAS, Douglas W. Huntley is an adjunct professor for the doctoral
program of education at the Sage Graduate School and the State
University of New York at Plattsburgh and St. Lawrence University; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Douglas W. Huntley is a frequent presenter for
several NYSCOSS superintendent development programs, and has recently
served as the keynote speaker at the Annual Google Summer Educators
Conference in New York, New York, the Tri County United Way Kickoff
luncheon, the North Country Symposium, and at the BOCES summer retreats
for superintendents; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout has been his loving wife, Mary-Jane,
his two sons, Brett and Garrett, and his two grandchildren, who have all
shown him love and support and rejoice in his many achievements; and
WHEREAS, Douglas W. Huntley's dedication to his community and to
scouting has had a lasting impact on the greater Queensbury community;
and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Douglas W. Huntley has
displayed throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, Douglas W. Huntley has clearly had an enduring impact on
the youth of Queensbury, as well as on the community-at-large, and
accordingly merits recognition and applause for his impressive
dedication to others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Douglas W. Huntley upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of the 2017 Good Scout Award on May 10, 2017; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Douglas W. Huntley.
