COMMENDING the students from the Lake Pleasant
Central School District upon the occasion of their
participation and 1st place victories in the KidWind
Challenge
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend and pay
tribute to those who, by achieving outstanding success in their
educational endeavors and competitions, have inspired and brought pride
to our majestic Empire State; and
WHEREAS, It is also the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
the dedication and commitment of our young people who distinguish
themselves through excellence in scholastic competition; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the students from the Lake Pleasant Central School District upon
the occasion of participating and their 1st place victories in the
KidWind Challenge; and
WHEREAS, The KidWind Challenge is the ultimate wind energy learning
experience for students; through this hands-on, investigative, and
exciting competition, students will discover the promise and limitations
of wind energy technology, compete with their peers in a supportive
environment, and design, build, and test a functional creative wind
turbine; and
WHEREAS, Students use recycled material in the construction of the
turbine, and create components by utilizing 3D printing and crafting in
the technology shop; the student's turbines are then tested to determine
their electrical output as a renewable energy source; and
WHEREAS, Lake Pleasant students from the eighth and ninth grade
traveled to SUNY Polytechnical Institute in Utica, New York, to compete
in the Regional Final against other teams from around the area; and
WHEREAS, The members of the eighth grade team took 1st place as well
as the 2nd and 3rd place spots in the middle school competition; and
WHEREAS, The ninth grade team captured 1st place in the high school
category; and
WHEREAS, The eighth grade students participating in the Challenge
included Alexis Brooks, Joshua Griffith, Daniel Johnson, Morgan Lane,
Willa Perkins, Jeremiah Pierce, and Sarah Smith; and
WHEREAS, The ninth grade team consisted of Madeline Braunius and
Alex Shepherd; and
WHEREAS, With these monumental wins, the two teams advanced to the
National KidWind Challenge at the AWEA WINDPOWER 2017 Conference in
Anaheim, California, held on May 24-25, 2017; and
WHEREAS, Known as the premier wind energy conference, WINDPOWER
showcases many of the major wind companies and wind developers from
across the United States; and
WHEREAS, The goal of the National KidWind Challenge is to provide a
venue for the top-scoring participants of the local KidWind Challenge
Events and the winners to compete in one location; the competition
involves tunnel testing, judging by engineering staff, instant
competitions, and student presentations; and
WHEREAS, Since KidWind Challenge's inception in 2009, approximately
11,000 students have competed, 13,000 teachers have been trained, and
75,000 wind turbines have been constructed; 123 KidWind Challenge Events
have been held in 19 states, and 204 REcharge Instructors have been
trained; and
WHEREAS, The incredible talent displayed by these teams is due in
great part to the efforts of teachers, Vanessa Saltis, science; David
Bobbette, technology; and Jon Swift, computer technologies, all skilled
and inspirational tutors respected for their ability to develop
potential into excellence; and
WHEREAS, The Lake Pleasant Central School District's eighth and
ninth-grade team members are loyally and enthusiastically supported by
their Assistant Principal, Katria Hitrick, and the entire school staff,
family, fans, friends and the community-at-large; and
WHEREAS, The dedicated members of the Lake Pleasant Central School
District's KidWind Team's outstanding performance have clearly made a
contribution to the spirit of excellence which is a tradition of their
school and community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the students from the Lake Pleasant Central School District upon
the occasion of their participation and 1st place victories in the
KidWind Competition; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the aforementioned members of the Lake Pleasant Central
School District Kid Wind Team, and to teachers, Vanessa Saltis, David
Bobbette, and Jon Swift.
