CONGRATULATING the Republic of Korea on its
selection as host for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games,
and commemorating its efforts to successfully
administer the world's premier international sports
event

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the most celebrated and significant events of the world, and
to recognize their effect on the many, diverse residents of the State of
New York; and

WHEREAS, The Olympic Winter Games represent the very pinnacle of
international competitive sports, and the Olympic Games have long been
lauded for their universal importance and worldwide impact, particularly
in relation to promoting peace, cooperation, solidarity between
countries; and

WHEREAS, Korean Americans, who form a large, vibrant community in
New York, represent a long and storied part of the American fabric,
having made numerous contributions to science, law, business, art, and
many other fields, and represented the United States in previous Olympic
Games with distinction, including as bronze, silver, and gold medal
winners; and

WHEREAS, PyeongChang will be the site of the 2018 Olympic Winter
Games, and its successful bid to bring the first ever Winter Olympic
Games to the Republic of Korea, thirty years after the 1988 Summer
Olympic Games were held in Seoul, the Republic of Korea; and

WHEREAS, In the spirit of the Olympic Truce, the Republic of Korea
has successfully negotiated an agreement to fly a unified flag for the
two Koreas, and to have their respective delegations march together at
the start of the Olympics' opening ceremony; and

WHEREAS, Many Korean Americans in the State of New York maintain
profound ties to the Korean peninsula through their family and culture,
and the 2018 Olympic Games, in continuing a long-standing tradition of
serving as a symbol of peace and unity, represent a momentous event for
both them and countless other New Yorkers; and

WHEREAS, PyeongChang will officially host the XXIII Olympic Winter
Games from February 9, 2018 to February 25, 2018, having previously been
selected by the International Olympic Committee on July 6, 2011; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
historic occasion of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang
County, South Korea, and to congratulate the Republic of Korea on its
role as host of this year's Olympic Games; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pauses in its deliberations to
commemorate the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, and to congratulate
the Republic of Korea as the host country for the XXIII Olympic Winter
Games; and be it further


RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Korean American Community of New York.
