COMMEMORATING the 50th Anniversary of Nauru
Independence to be celebrated on January 31, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to commemorate
historical events which exemplify the spirit and struggle of peoples
throughout the world to achieve independence and live in peace and
freedom; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Nauru Independence to be celebrated
on January 31, 2018; and
WHEREAS, Independence Day is a significant public holiday in Nauru;
it is celebrated every year and marks the date, after entering into a UN
trusteeship after World War II, it attained its independence in 1968;
and
WHEREAS, Each year, this auspicious occasion is celebrated and
provides an opportunity for all people to reflect upon the rich history
of the Republic of Nauru and the many contributions of Nauruans to our
country as well as the world; and
WHEREAS, Nauru, located in the South Pacific, is the world's
smallest independent republic island with a population of approximately
11,000 residents; though small in size, it has served as a voice of
reason in the international arena; and
WHEREAS, Millions of citizens of the State of New York share
together with the Republic of Nauru, a deep affinity for the Jewish
State and its principles of democracy; and
WHEREAS, In December of 2017, Nauru displayed its commitment to
justice by joining with the United States and other countries to vote
against a United Nations resolution condemning the recognition of
Jerusalem as the capital of Israel; Nauru has had diplomatic relations
with Israel since 1994, and has proven to be a true nation friend,
voting with Israel in every public forum in which they are both members;
and
WHEREAS, Both countries share many of the same values and principles
of democracy; they have enjoyed enduring friendship and valuable ties,
and have joined together on various agriculture, water and clean energy
projects; and
WHEREAS, On a recent visit to Israel, Nauru President Baron Waqa
reaffirmed his nation's unwavering support and friendship to the Jewish
State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Nauru Independence, and to wish its
leaders and citizens many more years of prosperity in good health,
tranquility and happiness, as well as thank them for their courage in
their unwavering support of Israel; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Baron Waqa, President, Nauru.
