HONORING Arthur Shertzer upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2017 Charles Hanson
Award for Professional Service by United University
Professionals

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve
the best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration
and cannot be sufficiently extolled; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Shertzer has given not only of his time and energies
but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently
has been designated for special honor; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Arthur
Shertzer upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the 2017
Charles Hanson Award for Professional Service by United University
Professionals, to be celebrated on Wednesday, March 7, 2018; and

WHEREAS, A 1977 graduate of Stony Brook University, Arthur Shertzer
continued his education at the University and earned a Master of Arts
degree in Labor Management Studies; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Shertzer began his illustrious career at Stony Brook
University as a Residence Hall Director in 1984; he became a Traffic
Hearing Officer in 1990, before teaching both credit and career
development coursework; and

WHEREAS, A longtime member of United University Professionals (UUP),
Arthur Shertzer served as Secretary of the West Campus UUP Chapter from
1998 until 2003, when he was elected Vice President for Professionals;
and

WHEREAS, As Vice President, Arthur Shertzer truly held the chapter
together, working full time as a professional and serving the union
cause with boundless energy; and

WHEREAS, In 2009, Arthur Shertzer was elected UUP Stony Brook West
Campus Chapter President; throughout his tenure, he profoundly grew the
chapter, increasing member involvement exponentially; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Shertzer has also served as a member of the UUP
Statewide Executive Board, the UUP Elections and Credentials Committee,
and as a Statewide Membership Development Officer; and

WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to social
justice on the Stony Brook campus, Arthur Shertzer has been actively
involved in the Campus Signs Committee, the Presidential Advisory
Committee of the Disabled, the Names Project for the AIDS Quilt
Memorial, the Campus Women's Safety Committee, the College Review Panel,
and the Adaptive Aquatics program for Autistic Children; and

WHEREAS, In addition, he has presented at countless collegiate
mental health conferences, and was instrumental in the success of the
Hats for Heroes program which recognizes Veterans; and

WHEREAS, A recognized leader, Arthur Shertzer was selected as
recipient of the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional
Service in 1994, for his tireless service to the campus community; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Arthur Shertzer has displayed
throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their
commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent
of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to
Arthur Shertzer, that future generations may know and appreciate his
admirable character, his many benevolent deeds, and the respect and
esteem in which he is held by his; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Arthur Shertzer upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the 2017 Charles Hanson Award for Professional Service by United
University Professionals; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Arthur Shertzer.
