COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the Town of
Oswego to be celebrated throughout the year

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Oswego to be celebrated
throughout the year; and

WHEREAS, The Town of Oswego was established by an act of the New
York State Legislature on April 20, 1818, to divide the Town of
Hannibal; and

WHEREAS, The first town meeting of the freeholders and inhabitants
of the Town of Oswego was held on May 5, 1818, at a schoolhouse in the
Village of Oswego; during this time, elected officials included
Supervisor, Eleazer Perry and Town Clerk, William Dolloway; and

WHEREAS, The Town of Oswego was the home of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker,
a strong advocate and leader in suffrage and dress reform movements, and
the only female to date to receive the congressional medal of honor for
services in the Civil War; and

WHEREAS, Additionally, the Town of Oswego was home to David Hall
McConnell, Founder of Avon Products, Inc. in 1886, and the Adams
Sisters, creators of the famous Colombian Dolls in the 1890s; and

WHEREAS, Today, the Town of Oswego remains abundant in fruit
orchards and strawberry fields; and

WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and
flow of decades of growth and change, the Town of Oswego continues to
provide the quintessential quality of life for its residents; and

WHEREAS, The residents of the Town of Oswego have a bright outlook
for the future of their community, which remains a beautiful place in
which to live and raise a family; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of the Town of Oswego's rich history and
enduring contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is
proud to pay tribute to this spirited town upon the occasion of its
200th Anniversary; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Oswego to be celebrated
throughout the year, recognizing the significance of the role it
continues to play in the life of the community of the State of New York;
and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Town of Oswego.
