CONGRATULATING Karanda Shuen upon the occasion of
being inducted into the 26th Annual May W. Newburger
Women's Roll of Honor by the Town of North
Hempstead, in conjunction with the observance of
Women's History Month

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those women of achievement within this great Empire State
who have made strong contributions to their communities and who inspire
others through their model citizenship; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate Karanda Shuen upon the occasion of being inducted into the
26th Annual May W. Newburger Women's Roll of Honor by the Town of North
Hempstead, in conjunction with the observance of Women's History Month,
to be celebrated with a breakfast on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at
Harbor Links Golf Course, Port Washington, New York; and

WHEREAS, Since 1994, North Hempstead has held the Women's Roll of
Honor breakfast to honor women who have made a contribution to their
community, or have accomplished a significant achievement through public
or private efforts; Karanda Shuen is one such woman; and

WHEREAS, Karanda Shuen is a 13-year resident of the Town of North
Hempstead, moving with her family from Oregon in 2006; she is a stay at
home mom who is a personable hard working volunteer in the North
Hempstead community; and

WHEREAS, Karanda Shuen volunteers at the Tzu Chi Foundation which is
an international humanitarian and non-governmental organization; she has
participated in the Tzu Chi Foundation sponsored events such as free
health clinics, clothes drive, soup kitchens, Earth Day events, and
Hurricane Sandy disaster relief events; and

WHEREAS, For three years, Karanda Shuen was one of the parent
coordinators of their Tsu Shao Youth Group; she is the coordinator of
the craft program for the Thursday New Hyde Park Senior Club at the
Clinton G. Martin Park; and

WHEREAS, Karanda Shuen has proved to be invaluable as a translator
for the Joy Fu Senior Chinese Club; she translates the announcements
into Chinese thus bridging the gap between Mandarin, Cantonese and
English; and she is the assistant coordinator of the craft program group
of the Joy Fu Senior Chinese Club; and

WHEREAS, Karanda Shuen is a member of the Chinese Center of Long
Island (CCLI) where she volunteers her time with the lion troupe and the
fan dancing group; she also participates in the twice annual fund
raising tag sales for CCLI; and

WHEREAS, Karanda Shuen tirelessly volunteers for many events; she is
able to successfully juggle her responsibilities for all her volunteer

efforts and fulfill the required tasks; she is responsible for creating
projects for both the Joy Fu Senior Chinese Club and the New Hyde Park
Senior Groups; some of the projects are the Chinese lantern making for
Chinese New Year, beautiful beaded necklaces, bracelets and rings; and

WHEREAS, Karanda Shuen not only has to organize these projects, she
has to manage the supplies and the budget for them; she is able to
accomplish these projects while caring for her household that consists
of her husband and two children; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Karanda Shuen has displayed
throughout her life; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of the State of New York; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Karanda Shuen upon the occasion of being inducted into the
26th Annual May W. Newburger Women's Roll of Honor by the Town of North
Hempstead, in conjunction with the observance of Women's History Month;
and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Karanda Shuen.
