COMMEMORATING the 225th Anniversary of the Town of
Springfield, New York
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 225th Anniversary of the Town of Springfield in Otsego
County, New York, to be celebrated on July 4, 2022; and
WHEREAS, In 1741, land patents were issued by the British Crown to
10 individuals in the region that would become Springfield, and by 1762,
the first five families took up land in that area; and
WHEREAS, In 1797, the Town of Springfield was founded, and the first
duly elected Town Board met to conduct the town business, maintain the
roads and collect taxes; and
WHEREAS, Through the 1800s, with the building of the Great Western
Turnpike, the Town of Springfield prospered, built churches and schools,
and established farms, factories, and mills; and
WHEREAS, By the turn of the century, improved roads, and the
introduction of steamboats on Lake Otsego allowed for the construction
of Springfield's great houses, and further expanded employment and
agriculture; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the Town of Springfield continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 225th Anniversary of the Town of Springfield, New York,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the communities of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Town of Springfield.
