On Sunday, February 21st, Senator Duane hosted a "Save St. Vincent's Hospital Day of Visibility" at the McBurney YMCA on West 14th Street at which the Senator and his staff distributed more than 800 posters to be displayed in area businesses and residences. In addition, those who came to the event signed more than 250 letters to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New York State Commissioner Richard N. Daines urging them to do all that is within their power to ensure that St. Vincent's Hospital does not close.
The event was made possible in part by the generosity of two obstetricians who practice at St. Vincent's Hospital, Dr. Jaqueline Worth and Dr. George Mussalli, who paid to print hundreds of "Save St. Vincent's Hospital" posters. In addition, the pair created a website, www.savestvincents.com, that is chronicling the efforts of the St. Vincent's and Greenwich Village communities, along with local and state elected officials, to ensure that their hospital remains open.
Sunday's event was organized and promoted with the help of co-sponsors New York City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, New York City Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, New York City Comptroller John C. Liu, Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer, United States Rep. Jerrold Nadler, New York State Seantor Daniel L. Squadron, New York City Council Member Margaret S. Chin and New York State Assembly Members Deborah J. Glick, Richard N. Gottfried and Linda B. Rosenthal.
Please visit www.savestvincents.com, as well as this website, for further updates and information on future events as we fight to ensure that St. Vincent's hospital, the only full service hospital on the lower west side of Manhattan, remains open.
