State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) inducted Suffolk VFW Jr. Vice Commander, George Egan, into the New York State Senate’s Veterans Hall of Fame on Tuesday June 14, 2011 during a ceremony at the Legislative Office Building in Albany.
Mr. Egan enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1963 while in high school and was honorably discharged on August 26, 1963 so he could enlist in the regular Army. He completed basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and advanced armor training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was then assigned to BCA/1st BN, 15th Armor, 1st Cavalry Division (DMZ), Korea from January of 1964 to January of 1965. After leaving the service, he became a member of the LIRR Police Department, which eventually merged into the MTA Police. In 1990, Mr. Egan joined up again, enlisting in the New York Army National Guard.
His long and decorated military career concluded on Oct. 26, 2005 with an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army Reserve. Mr. Egan continues to serve his country today as an active member of the VFW, Am Vets, and the American Legion. He has been married to his wife, MaryAnn, for 43 years. They have three children and eight grandchildren.
