2/19/2011: Operation SNUG Seminar

During the Stop the Violence event hosted by SNUG on February 19, 2011, many were present to show support for the group’s effort. New York State Senator Shirley L. Huntley (D-Jamaica) was among those present to show her appreciation and gratitude for the group’s efforts in removing guns from high crime areas. She also thanked them for their endless campaign to educate the public about guns, gangs and violence. Senator Huntley continues to support SNUG and their valiant mission to end violence from neighborhoods and communities around New York.

SNUG, guns spelled backward, is a program initiative developed to respond to high rates of crime around New York. Many cities and neighborhoods have benefitted from the presence of SNUG, including Albany, Niagara Falls, Brooklyn, Queens, Buffalo, Manhattan, Rochester, Syracuse, Mt. Vernon and Yonkers. As a violence intervention program, SNUG tries to intervene by identifying potential conflicts and cultivating relationships to prevent retaliatory violence. SNUG members also help to build relationships between police and homeowners, business owners and residents of the community in order to create better communication and understanding to prevent future incidents. While SNUG does not replace law enforcement agencies, they have been known to help bridge the gap and build trust between communities and their local precincts. SNUG has been successful in its efforts to replace hostility with acceptance and tolerance.

Senator Huntley also proudly supports SNUG and their Don’t Shoot N.Y. rally that will take place on February 27, 2011 at United Nations Plaza at 42nd Street and First Avenue. The event will begin at 2:30 P.M. and Senator Huntley enthusiastically encourages everyone to attend and join forces to end gun violence.
