Fighting for Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village Residents

On Jan 26, I had my first opportunity as a New York State Senator to address a meeting of the Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village Tenants Association (ST-PCV TA).  It was inspiring to see hundreds of ST-PCV residents stream into the Baruch College Mason Hall on a freezing Saturday afternoon to hear an update on matters of importance to tenants of the complex, to voice their concerns, and to come together in unity for benefit of the community as a whole.  It speaks to the TA's strength that not only local elected officials but citywide leaders attended as well.  ST-PCV is a crucial component of our affordable, middle-class housing stock and I once again pledged my support for the TA’s and New York City Councilmember Dan Garodnick's efforts to ensure a more stable and affordable future through a conversion plan that gives residents an opportunity to buy their apartments at a reasonable price, while also allowing them to retain their rent-stabilized status without fear of harassment should they choose to continue to rent.  I also spoke of my efforts, with Councilmember Garodnick, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Manhattan Borough President Stringer and NYS Assembly Member Kavanagh, to ensure that CW Capital is doing its due diligence as a landlord, and respecting tenants’ rights. I will continue to work closely with the TA leadership and my colleagues in government on behalf of current ST-PCV tenants and on behalf of future generations of middle class New Yorkers.
