Statement by State Senator Brad Hoylman on City Council Decision to Reject Plan to Rezone East Midtown Manhattan

New York, NY – New York State Senator Brad Hoylman released the following statement in response to the announcement by New York City Councilmember Dan Garodnick and City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn that an agreement could not be reached on the Bloomberg Administration’s East Midtown Rezoning proposal:
 
“I applaud City Councilmember Dan Garodnick and Speaker Christine Quinn for turning back the East Midtown rezoning plan. Rather than attempt to strike an incomplete deal, they made the sensible decision to hold out for the thoughtful, bold plan the midtown business district needs and the city deserves.
 
“This project will be back, but better. I’m confident that Mayor-elect de Blasio will work with local communities, business leaders and other advocates to develop a new plan for East Midtown that includes new infrastructure, public realm improvements and historic preservation in order to ensure the future of the area as the premiere business district in New York City.
 
“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for our city. I appreciate the Bloomberg Administration taking up this important proposal, but am gratified that the City Council is taking its time to get it right.”
