Senator Nozzolio Honors POW/MIA Recognition Day
Michael F. Nozzolio
September 20, 2013
Together we pause to remember the sacrifices and service of members of the U.S. armed forces who were once prisoners of war (POW), as well as those who are missing in action (MIA). Today is a day to take time and remember the brave Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines who have been held captive or never returned home from war.
No nation in the history of the world has ever done more or given more in the defense of world freedom than the United States and her citizens. And for that, we are grateful to all of those who were willing to serve their country and make the ultimate sacrifice. It is fitting that we pause to reflect on the sacrifices our veterans have made to preserve our freedoms, protect our democracy and secure a safer, more peaceful world. We owe them more than we will ever be able to repay.
For over fifteen years, I have worked aggressively with local veterans and their families to establish the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery as a lasting tribute to all servicemen and women.
The Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery is located on the hallowed ground of the former Sampson Naval and Air Force bases, where over one million sailors and airmen trained in preparation for battle to defend the United States of America. The Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery was dedicated in 2011 and is already the final resting place for over 100 veterans and their family members. The Cemetery is located in Romulus, New York, a tremendously beautiful setting on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake, and within the shadow of the nationally recognized birthplace of Memorial Day in Waterloo.
All honorably discharged veterans and their spouses are eligible for burial at the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery. To learn more about the Cemetery, please visit the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery website at www.sampsonveteranscemetery.com or call Bill Yale, Cemetery Director, at 607-379-0197.
