Squadron Community Convention Draws 400+ to ‘Make The National Fight Local’

Attendees Share Feedback, Ideas in 13 Breakout Sessions

NEW YORK – State Senator Daniel Squadron hosted his annual Community Convention on Sunday, which drew 400+. This year’s Convention focused on ‘making the national fight local,’ and featured a keynote address by Akeem Browder, brother of the late Kalief Browder. Akeem is a criminal justice reform advocate, and was central to the recent successful push to Raise the Age for criminal responsibility.

“Since year one, the Convention has been a chance for my district to come together on issues that matter most to each individual and neighborhood,” said State Senator Daniel Squadron. “Some years attendees have been driven by hope for a better government, and some years by a fear of the one we have -- but regardless of the reason, the Convention brings people together to get involved and make an impact. Thank you to the hundreds of community members who volunteered a Sunday to join the Convention, as well as the elected officials and organization and community leaders who helped make this year a success.”

Squadron’s Community Convention was also attended by Senator Schumer, Comptroller Stringer, Public Advocate James, Borough President Brewer, Assemblymembers Niou and Simon, and Councilmember Chin. Participants shared ideas throughout 13 different moderated break-out groups, including Cantonese, Mandarin, and Spanish-language translation. Squadron uses feedback from the Convention to help shape and inform local and legislative priorities throughout the year.
