Squadron Statement On Successful Effort to Expand Bus Service to Lower Manhattan
June 19, 2017
Manhattan – State Senator Daniel Squadron released the following statement on the MTA New York City Transit & Bus Committee’s approval of an extension of M1 bus service in Lower Manhattan. The full 1.5 mile extension will bring the M1 southbound on Broadway to Worth Street, and northbound on Centre. During the Worth Street construction project, the interim extension will terminate at Grand Street:
“Extending the M1 downtown is great news for those in Lower Manhattan, and everyone who needs another bus route to get here. The mile and a half south of Washington Square Park has been underserved since 2010, with limited north-south service from 6th Avenue to Bowery.
“For two years, I’ve been working with Community Board 2 and the MTA on solutions that can help link Lower Manhattan to the South Village and beyond -- today is a new milestone (1.5 miles south) in that push.
“Thank you to the MTA and NYCT, as well as Community Board 2, especially Chair Terri Cude, and my colleagues.”

The MTA NYCT-recommended service change voted on today was as follows: “Extend every other weekday M1 trip (from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.) and every weekend M1 trip from Astor Place to Grand Street until completion of the Worth Street Reconstruction Project. At the completion of the reconstruction project, the M1 would be extended to Worth Street.”
