(Middletown, NY)- State Senator John J. Bonacic (R/C/I-Mt. Hope) and Town of Wallkill Supervisor Dan Depew announced today that construction to improve safety issues on Route 302 will begin this year. The project, called the Route 302 Safety Initiative by the New York State Department of Transportation, will include upgraded pavement markings, centerline audible roadway delineators where eligible, roadside clearance zones, guide rail installation, and culvert upgrades where necessary. The roadway will also be resurfaced as part of New York’s Pavement Preservation Program.
Both Senator Bonacic and Supervisor Depew were instrumental in working with the DOT to move this project forward. The project will cost $3.738 million, and work will take place on Route 302 between NY 17M and NY 17K in the Town of Wallkill, and between 17K and NY 52 in the Town of Crawford. The DOT will begin surveying and preliminary construction activities in the next few weeks, with most of the construction work to begin during the 2017 construction season. It is expected that a substantial amount of the work will be finished by October 31, 2017.
“My office has been in contact with DOT since 2014 about the issues on Route 302, and I am happy that they will now begin to fix the problems,” said Senator Bonacic. “I also want to thank Supervisor Depew for his continued advocacy on behalf of the taxpayers in the Town of Wallkill, and for working with me to get the DOT to act.”
Town of Wallkill Supervisor Dan Depew said, “Many of our local leaders have pushed for improvements to this road; two of them, Councilman’s Carr and now Coyne who represent the Town of Wallkill in this area have been steadfast in their commitment to keep pressure on improvements to not just the Crawford side of the road but also the Wallkill side. This state road is critical to the Pine Bush Central School District. To students and families this road represents the main transportation hub to all school facilities and has lacked the proper attention for years. Thank you to New York State DOT, Senator John Bonacic and all others including citizens who supported our efforts in repairing this critical roadway from Wallkill through Crawford.”
