Senator Roxanne J. Persaud works to close the gap between College Aspiration and College Success in the District and Beyond

(Brooklyn, NY) Senator Roxanne J. Persaud reached hundreds of high school students and parents at the inaugural SD 19 College and Resource Fair.

This College and Resource Fair was held in partnership with South Shore Education Campus, Assemblywoman Jaime Williams and Councilman Alan Maisel.

This very engaging and empowering event took place on Saturday, April 14, 2018, from 12 PM to 3 PM., at the South Shore Educational Campus located at 6565 Flatlands Ave. Brooklyn, N.Y. 11236.

“There is a huge difference between college aspiration and college achievement: Students may aspire to attend college but due to many factors including lack of resources and preparation, they do not get a chance to graduate with and have a successful career. Additionally, far too many students especially special education, minority student, and students with of parents who do not have a college are not receiving the resources they need to succeed in college and in their careers.” Senator Roxanne J. Persaud 

Families had an opportunity to get valuable information and tips to help them understand the financial aid application process when applying for Federal Aid, Grants, and Scholarships.

Over 75 colleges presented information to prospective applicants to help them navigate the college enrollment process: CUNY ASAP Ambassador Program, Berkeley College, Macaulay Honors College, Medgar Evers College, New York City College of Technology, York College, Guttman Community College, Kingsborough Community College, LaGuardia Community College, College at Brockport (SUNY), University at Buffalo, SUNY Cobleskill, Fashion Institute of Technology, Fulton-Montgomery Community College, Geneseo College, Jefferson, Monroe Community College, Morrisville College, Oneonta College, Plattsburgh College, Purchase College, Touro College & University System ,University of Bridgeport, Virginia State University, The School of Cooperative Technical Education, St. Francis College, Savannah College of Art and Design, SUNY Welcome Center, CUNY Welcome Center, Manhattan College, Wells College, Kean University, ASA College, State University of New York Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center.

There  were tons of  invaluable resources available onsite from elected officials NYS Senator Persaud and NYS Assemblymember Williams as well as: Fresh Air Fund, Cody Cares, Brooklyn District Attorney, NYC Comptroller’s Office, Camp Brooklyn Fund, Wells Fargo, NYC Department of Youth and Community Development, NHS Brooklyn, Digital Girl Inc, US Department of Education Federal Student Aid Outreach, GetCoveredNYC,  Arts East New York, NIA Community Services Network, Trail Blazers, Groundswell, Camp Jump In, Camp Fiver, NYS Higher Education Services Corporation, State University of New York, Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center and Job Corps.

Senator Persaud's office also organized a raffle with over 10 prizes including an 8-inch Amazon Fire Tablet, flash drives, boutique haircuts, and College Application Fee CUNY/SUNY, which added to the excitement and the experience.

“Students’ success in life depends on how much they prepare and how much access they have to resources. My office will continue to design and lead targeted initiatives and programs that help students with their college preparation. It is my aim to reach students in the 19th senatorial district and beyond,  knowing that when we invest in our students, we, in turn, lower the cost to families and society in general. “Senator Persaud said.
