Tropical Storm Isaias Recovery Update

As of 3:00 PM this afternoon, PSEG Long Island has reported that 100,000 customers remain without power here in Nassau County, including 35,000 within the Town of Hempstead. I’ve heard from countless families without power, and without answers from PSEG-LI. I am deeply concerned by PSEG-LI’s widespread communication failures amid and following Tropical Storm Isaias.

This complete failure of PSEG-LI’s communication systems, especially amid a pandemic, is unacceptable. In response to this crisis, my Long Island Senate colleagues and I are calling for an investigation into PSEG-LI, Verizon Wireless, and LIPA’s handling and lack of preparedness for this storm, because Long Islanders deserve better than this.

Our essential workers and first responders have been working non-stop to remove tree limbs from roadways, restore power, and mitigate potential flooding. I am extremely grateful for their hard work and dedication to helping our communities recover quickly from Tropical Storm Isaias. As they continue to clear the debris and repair our utilities, I urge residents to use precaution when traveling, and report any downed wires or electric emergencies to PSEG immediately.

Downed Wire or Electric Emergency?

Because electricity may still be flowing through the lines, that makes them extremely dangerous. Stay at least 30 feet away (at least two full pole spans) from all downed wires and keep others from going near them as well. Call 911 or PSEG Long Island's 24-hour emergency line at 1-800-490-0075 immediately.

Reporting Trees and Road Maintenance Issues

Tree clearance is the responsibility of the municipality that owns your road. To find out which municipality owns your road, you can visit http://nassaucountyny.gov/myroads. Alternatively, residents can contact Nassau County Department of Public Works crew at 516-571-6900.

Open Cooling/Charging Centers in Nassau County

Nassau County’s cooling centers are available for anyone who needs to cool down in the air-conditioning on days of extreme temperatures or to charge their electronic devices. We will be following the state’s guidelines for cooling centers to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Anyone who arrives without a mask will be provided one.
