Senator Montgomery welcomes NYU Langone and School Based Health Center student advocates to Albany. School based Health Centers are youth orientated health clinics throughout the state that are housed within schools. Being housed within the school allows for students to get the services they need while missing minimial seat time in the classroom. While also provide parents with an avenue for their child to be treated within the school, so they would not have to take time away from work.
The student advocates did an eloquent job of advocating for more funding for School Based Health Centers across the state. Illustrating the increased need for the services that they provide. Students and their families rely on school-based health centers to meet their needs for a full range of age-appropriate health care services, such as but not limited to:
- Primary medical care
- Mental and or Behavioral health services
- Dental or oral hygiene services
- Optometry services
- Nutritional education
SBHCs connect schools with community health institutions like hospitals and clinics to create the most healthy learning environment for students throughout the state.
