As part of its annual AKA Day at the Capitol Program, The New York State Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., led by the Pi Iota Omega Chapter from White Plains, NY, honor State Senator Velmanette Montgomery, a champion defender of human rights in New York State. Senator Montgomery is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and her work truly embodies its mission, “To be Supreme in Service to All Mankind”. Senator Montgomery has served in the New York State Senate for 35 years. She is the chair of the standing committee and Children and Families and represents the 25th District, which encompasses North and Central Brooklyn. Her work has had a substantial impact on the people of New York State, from children and families, prisoners’ rights, criminal justice reform, foster care, the youth and young professionals, to name a few. She was honored for her service during their workshop, “Breaking Down Barriers to Affording a College Degree.”
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded on January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s mission is to cultivate high and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of “Service to all Mankind.” Its service programming targets 5 areas; HBCU for Life: A Call to Action, Women’s Healthcare and Wellness, Building Your Economic Legacy, The Arts, and Global Impact. Currently, there are 300,000 members and alumnae with chapters in the United States, Germany, the Bahamas, Liberia, South Korea, Japan, Canada, South Africa and the Middle East.
