Community Update: Senate One-House Budget & Upcoming Events

Shelley B. Mayer

March 15, 2022

Dear Friends,

Yesterday, I joined my colleagues in advancing the New York State Senate’s one-house budget resolution. It includes the second year of our commitment to fully fund Foundation Aid, builds on our commitment to universal pre-k outside of New York City, invests in Career and Technical Education, ensures our special education schools get the money they deserve, and recognizes the need to address the social and emotional health of our students. To read the full resolution, please visit the Senate’s website. I look forward to sharing more information in the coming weeks as the Senate, Assembly, and Governor’s office work to negotiate a final budget.

As we continue to celebrate Women’s History Month, I hope you will take some time to reflect on the progress we have made and the women in your life who inspire you. On Friday, March 25, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and I will host a panel discussion on the challenges women have had to face and overcome as a result of the pandemic. More information is available below.

Last month, I received many calls about the increase in Con Edison bills. In response I called on Con Ed and the Public Service Commission to respond promptly and to forego any previously-approved rate increase. Tomorrow, I will continue my constituent outreach with an information session. The Public Utility Law Project of New York and Sustainable Westchester will discuss what goes into the price of your energy bills and how you can reduce your energy costs at home. More information is available below.

On Thursday, I will be joined by Senator Pete Harckham and Revolutionary War era living history reenactors to celebrate the signing of the 250th Commemoration Act, which I sponsored in the Senate. This legislation will allow New York State to start planning our semiquincentennial celebration in 2026. The celebration will take place at Verplank’s Point, where General George Washington escaped from the British after the Battle of White Plains, and where the French and American armies crossed the Hudson River on their way to victory at the Battle of Yorktown. More information is available below.

As always, if there is anything my office can assist you with, please email me at smayer@nysenate.gov or call (914) 934-5250.

Warm regards,

Shelley Mayer

State Senator, 37th District
