Community Update: Remembering 9/11, Back to School, Public Safety Legislation

Dear Friends,
This week marked twenty-three years since the tragic events of 9/11. May we remember and honor those who lost their lives and all those who selflessly answered the call to respond, especially the firefighters and other first responders who exhibited such enormous courage, those who lost their lives that day simply because they were present, and all those who have died from 9/11-related illness. We will never forget. We must ensure the next generation truly understands this tragic and consequential day in American history. I intend to push for greater attention to 9/11 in our schools, so that all our children understand the importance of that day and the lasting impact it has had.
As we begin the new school year, I wish all students, teachers, faculty, and staff a great year filled with excitement and opportunity. On the first day of school, I was fortunate to visit Midland School in the Rye City School District to welcome the students back to school. Thanks to Superintendent Dr. Eric Byrne, Principal James Boylan, and Assistant Principal Bianaca McHale who greeted me. A new school year is always an exciting time and I look forward to the return of high school sports, theater performances, and more.
I was happy to partner with United Way of Westchester and Putnam Counties this year for my second annual back-to-school supply drive. School supplies can be prohibitively expensive for many families, and I thank all the incredibly generous people in our community who donated. Together we donated 637 items to families in need!
If there is anything my office can assist you with, please email me at smayer@nysenate.gov or call (914) 934-5250.
Warm regards,
Shelley B. Mayer
